Title: Contest: WTHAI?: Win up to 20 BTC Daily
Post by: Phinnaeus Gage on December 25, 2011, 01:07:26 AM
Winnings Paid to Date: 6.1 BTC                     Bitcoin100 Donations to Date: 8 BTC (pending)

Play the richest Bitcoin related contest currently running on BitcoinTalk. This contest is guaranteed to pay out between no less than 730 BTC (in donations to Bitcoin100) and 7,300+ >10,000 BTC to individual winners, all over the course of the next 3565+ days.

Play WTHAI? (Where the Heck am I?) and win 10 BTC. Win double--20 BTC--if the correct answer is provided within the first hour of the posted image's time stamp. I'll even double your winnings if you correctly answer two locations in a row. Watch for a new image daily.

The rules are simple: (and the contest becomes easier as time passes)

  • 1. Guess the locations of the Google Map Images. (could me anywhere in the world) A new image posted every day.
  • 2. Post your answers on this thread. One guess per image, per post is allowed.
  • 3. The first person who answers correctly with the exact location of any of the daily contests wins 10 BTC, if answered within the first 24 hours of that image's first appearance.
  • 4. If after 24 hours there is no correct answer, the prize will be halved to 5 BTC for the next 24 hours, and so on, downward toward 1 Satoshi.
  • 5. If after 30 days there is no winner, the answer will be revealed and I will donate 1 BTC to Bitcoin100.
  • 6. 24 hours will be calculated via the time stamp of the posting of the image on this forum.
  • 7. To win the prize, the correct answer must include an image, one pulled back revealing that there's a match with a 100% degree of certainty.
  • 8. I reserve the right to cancel this contest if I see or smell robot droppings.
  • 9. Feel free to guess. If I respond in the affirmative for any of the guesses, that particular prize amount, for that particular image, will be extended for 1 day. 1 extension per day, per image, per prize amount.
  • 10. One person can win multiple times.
  • 11. If I don't comment on your guesses within a reasonable time period or before my very next post after your guesses, safely assume they are incorrect.
  • 12. Once somebody guesses correctly, I will also donate 2 BTC to Bitcoin100 along with paying them their winnings.
  • 13. The guessing of hemispheres and continents is allowed, but will not be commented on in the negative or affirmative, unless I choose to do such.

Feel free to ask any contest related questions. The rules may be modified in the future, but never changed to avoid any payouts. I would rather payout, then engage in conflict.

All images are oriented as if you were reading any map--top is north. No images have been altered in any way. Just screenshot, cropped, then posted on Flickr.

You are so close! You're on the right planet. Thank you for playing, Sannyasi. Remember, you're only allowed 100 guesses within a 24 hour period, so guess wisely.

EDIT: The following has been placed here for prosperity, thus freeing up space in the OP:

It is a small town in north UK, but I don't want to do a log grep search. So others can use it as a hint.

Are you telling me that the location could be found via a log grep search, even though it's a cropped screenshot, put into another file, renamed, all prior to posting it on Flickr?

I can see how that could be used to find the color of RandyFolds underwear, but not this image. Prove me wrong!

No, I am telling you I have a somewhat eidetic memory and recall this coming up on one of the channels, I believe -otc or #bitcoin proper .  I obviously don't have a perfect eidetic memory tho...

Although, I seem to recall the name of the town starting with a "C". I am also telling you that I don't want 10 btc bad enough to go find out. So I'll just throw it out there for others to find. :)

Oh, OR, I could be completely wrong... Like I said, it was a guess. I usually guess pretty good tho...

BTW: Do you sell the wallets? It's kind of cool.

And yea, what's up with that avatar :(  Randy's I mean.

I just sent you a PM in regards to the wallet question. For everybody else, I sell the leather wallets that my famous brother-in-law hand-tools.

Pay the RF underwear comment no mind. (I may have made that up)

I guess it would be fair to say that your guess is totally incorrect. It's nothing related to anything ever posted on this forum before, and doubt pretty much it's ever been referenced in any other photo before either. I simply picked a spot and zoomed it, visualizing what it would look liked cropped, then went from there.

On the surface, this looks like a tough game, until the interaction starts. I wanted the prize to be high enough to warrant activity, and not too low to have the opposite effect. I even tossed in the Bitcoin100 donation aspect for good measure. Therefore, if I did this every day, for 365 days, and nobody ever guessed correctly, 365 BTC would be donated to Bitcoin100. Genius, eh?

Cool,

I sent you 1 BTC for the BitCoin 100.

Not a bad idea. I generally try to support the BitCoin community.

I'm sad I missed the guess. But hey, if I was never wrong, I would be relaxing somewhere. :)

I'll get with you after the holidays on the wallet. Thnx.

TY, P4man. I will not being showing anybody's backyard, although that was not your concern. It gets easier once the clues are presented in the form of answering questions, like...

Somewhere in Cornwall, UK? (The most southwest county of England)

Nope!

See how much I have narrowed down the possibilities with that answer?

WTHAI 2 will be available later today. Watch for it.

I'm guessing its somewhere in Nebraska,US in the city of Brunswick maybe.(damn the 1 guess per post policy as I had 7 guesses in this state)

Based on this:

The two images represent two completely different locations and are for two completely different contests. Remember, a new contest starts every day. WTHAI 1 was the first and has 29 days left to guess the answer, and WTHAI 2 just started about an hour ago. Therefore, when guessing, referred to which image your guess applies.

Are you telling me that the location could be found via a log grep search, even though it's a cropped screenshot, put into another file, renamed, all prior to posting it on Flickr?

I can see how that could be used to find the color of RandyFolds underwear, but not this image. Prove me wrong!

Underwear? You assume too much, good sir.

Thanks, BTCurious. The built-in beauty of this contest is that even if nobody personally wins, Bitcoin100 will receive 365+ BTC in donations over a course of a year. This contest thread will act as an awareness for Bitcoin100. Genius, eh?

Let's say, for sake of argument, I forgot to spell that out priorly. Your assumption is correct, and now stipulated as such in the rules.

As I've mentioned earlier, if I don't respond to guesses in the affirmative (either in a timely manner or upon a user(s) reading my very first post after guesses have been posted), assume they're incorrect.

Me and my big mouth!

To date, all guesses for WTHAI 1 & 2 are incorrect. Consider that a gift, for I've previously stated that I would mostly answer guesses in the affirmative.

Soon, WTHAI 1 will have a prize of only 2.5 TBC, and WTHAI 2's will be only 5 BTC. But stay tuned. WTHAI 3 is right around the corner with a prize of 10 BTC unless (NEW RULE) one guesses its location within the first hour of its posting, then the prize is doubled to 20 BTC.

Why is it always the fat guy that knows how I think?

Now I need to make another rule stating that all guesses are to be of locations found only on Earth, unless RF sets on me and I scream, "Uncle!"

Nice post! Here's a cookie!

WTHAI #1: Ireland.

WTHAI  #2: Ethiopia or Eritrea or Somalia

WTHAI #3: Argentina

WTHAI #4: An undisclosed location in the desert near Las Vegas, on a movie set before the alleged Apollo lunar landing module footage was added- notice that utter lack of stars in the "nighttime sky". Some sources believe the set was constructed inside Building #208 at Groom Lake, although this has long been denied by the US Government. A far less supported belief, but one much closer to the truth, is that the set was actually built underground on the border of Area 52, one quarter of a mile from the run-out of Deadman Wash, and is accesses through a simple "Observation Post" know at Station 700.

But I have no specific knowledge of any of these things.

I'm almost certain you got #4 exactly correct, although it wasn't part of the contest because RandyFolds tried to hijack this thread. See if he will give you the 10 BTC prize before he spends it on another pallet of Oreos. And if he doesn't, may I suggest you get out one of those alien probes and... On second thought, forget that idea.

Let's say, for the sake of argument, that Cahokia Mounds is close. Exactly which mound? And if you found it, provide an image to show proof of work. Remember, this is just meant for the sake of argument.  ;)

That's indicative of all Google Map Images when one zooms in. The words seen should have nothing to do with the image, otherwise this would be an easier contest. I believe all the text is the same and reads '2011 Google'.

WTHA1: is in the northern hemisphere, likely south of 60 degrees north, north of 22 degrees north. That rules out Africa.

WTHA2: is closer to the equator, the only visible shaddows appear to exgagerated by the nearby creakbed. I Estimate summer, between 0 degrees north and 45 degrees north.

WTHA3: No visible shadow detail, hint given is "south america"

WTHA4: Cloud shadows suggest morning near the equator, likey between 30 degrees south/north. Hint was "Africa", my analysis narrows it to north Africa.

WTHA5: Shadow detail is hard to see; appears to be another morning image. Hint was Asia. I think I can narrow it to between 22 south and 45 north, which eliminates most of Russia.

PS: voted both "Yes" and "No" in the poll :)

I found the shadow detail in WTHAI 3: you can see it around valleys and that depression that may indicate the mountain is a volcano. I now estimate 45 degrees south +-30. If it is in brazil, it would have to be the southern half. My guess: Chile Argentina.

What 4 update: Looking at a globe, the equator actually runs through the middle of africa. Phinnaeus Gage was being nice when he narrowed it to "North Africa".

Edit: Chile appears to be too mountianous for WTHAI3.

Yes, shadows do exist. I am skeptical that you can draw conjectures as to season and latitude from them as they vary daily and seasonally, and you have no information as to the angle of incidence for the photograph. I am curious how these 'calculations' are made. My notion is that all you can really say if a shadow exists is that the image was not taken at high noon at the equator. Other than that, it seems like total BS. I am curious to learn more if this really is a legitimate method of analysis.

I guess if you know the alignment of the image with regards to true north, you could make a pass at whether it is the northern or southern hemisphere, but how can you take that any further not knowing the time or season of the photograph?

I think your shadow information is irrelevant...can you explain it further?

So far they have been gut feelings. Since my last post, I have been pondering how to get a more precise fix on the latitude of WTHAI1.

For WTHAI 4, I knew it must be about 10 am when the picture was taken because the shadow was almost directly below the fluffy white clouds that typically float at least 1000-2000ft (300-580m) above the surface. Despite this, the shadow is only slightly north of the clouds. That tells me it is near the equator. However, because it is near the equator, I can not tell the season based on the vegetation.

Up here at 55 degrees north, the ground is brown/white in the winter (Google has used winter images in the past).  Not knowing the season is a major source of error since the Earth is tilted on its axis about 22.5 degrees. That means even if I correctly guage the angle of elevation of the sun, the corresponding Latitude can vary by up to 43 degrees.

For WTHAI1, the long shadows hint at a location close to the poles. The green deciduous trees indicate that it is summer (and not too close to the poles). This means I have the potential to narrow the angle of elevation to within 22 degrees: if I can just measure the angle of elevation of the sun. I can probably determine the time the picture was taken within about 30 minutes (Standard local time). For example, WTHAI1 was taken at 12:30 1300 (Correction: sundials are 24 hour clocks...). The length of the shadow varies throughout the day. It is longest at either midnight or sunrise/sunset; shortest at noon.

The difficulty is that to determine the angle of the sun from objects on the ground, I have to know how tall those objects are. Trees are tricky because their height changes based of how far north they are, as well as with how much water they get. I am assuming that the pictures are taken from directly overhead. This will be true for aerial photos, and likely many of the satellite photos.

Even if I determine how tall an object on the ground is, I still don't know when sunrise is... because I don't know the latitude (or exact day). I have yet to deterime if I can solve a series of equations (with a least 2 unknowns) for elevation of the light source.

TL;DR: I can determine the hemisphere (North vs South) with a high degree of certainty. Other than that, I may be just guessing using other visual cues. Generally, the closer to the poles you go, the longer the shadows at high noon.

You know I was doing as much as possible without actually firing up Google Maps (which requires enabling JavaScript), right?

I suspect that WTHAI 4 can only be solved using Google, not competitors like Yahoo! or Microsoft. The distinguishing marks (the clouds) are specific to Google's satellite pass. Though, the apparent change in resolution at the border may not be a coincidence.

I am probably going to bed.

I found WTHAI 4. However, pulling back as required by the rules, changes Google images' tileset, so this does not show clearly that what I found is what the picture is.
Instead, I'll provide a link to the location. Anyone can verify easily that this is the exact same location (check the clouds). I trust this will be enough proof:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=chad&hl=de&ll=9.306116,17.987709&spn=0.082499,0.169086&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=33.901528,86.572266&vpsrc=6&hnear=Tschad&t=h&z=13

It's in Chad, on the border of a national park (which explains the farming on one side of the road, and the green grass on the other).

How much is it worth at the moment? Anyway, any address in my sig will do :)

Cheers!

Dang, Bomholm afterall? I spent tens of minutes searching for that bit of yellow road with some pieces of white close by. Nice find!

This thread has been closed due to the lack of interest!  ;D ;D ;D

Give me a few minutes to work out what's owed, and will post the results as well. Winners feel free to PM me an address as to where you'll like your coins sent.

WTHAI? 7 will soon be published as well.

We have our very first winners: BTCurious & SgtSpike (WTHAI? 4 & WTHAI? 1, respectively).

Payouts based on the using of the time stamps of the image's first posting and when the winners first published their findings:

WTHAI? 4: First posted on December 27, 2011, 06:51:45 PM and found Today at 02:00:04 PM. Pays 2.5 BTC, since found before 06:51:45 PM (today).
WTHAI? 1: First posted on December 24, 2011, 07:07:26 PM and found Today at 03:32:03 PM. Pays .3125 BTC, since found before 07:07:26 PM (today).

I've opt to pay out 3 BTC to BTCurious and 1 BTC to SgtSpike, as a special thanks for playing and being the first two winners.

Future payouts will be as follows:

  • 20 BTC if found within the first hour.
  • 10 BTC if found within the next 23 hours.
  • 5 BTC if found before the end of the second day using time stamps (same applies below).
  • 3 BTC if found before the end of the third day.
  • 1.5 BTC if found before the end of the forth day.
  • 1 BTC if found before the end of the fifth day.
  • .5 BTC if found before the end of the sixth day.
  • .1 BTC if found before the end of the seventh day up to 30 days later.

As one can clearly see, this new payout schedule is better than what was originally proposed.

Let the fun continue!

It was a joke, Spike. Looking up your address now. Thanks again for playing.

~Bruno~

EDIT: Both payments have now been sent out. I'm sure if that were not the case, you would soon hear from the whiners winners. Also per the rules that I've self-imposed, I owe a 4 BTC donation to Bitcoin100 as a result of these two correct answers. I have yet to honor that commitment, but will post on this thread and the main Bitcoin100 thread when I do such.

WTHAI 1: Sri Lanka http://www.sinhala-online.com/sinhala-nae-18-ffffff.jpg
WTHAI 2: Malaysia  Close!
WTHAI 3: Brazil  No
WTHAI 4: Nigeria  Ùú
WTHAI 5: China 没有
I'm gonna assume this all means "No", except for the Malaysia one.

I tried Google maps but even small islands are huge, so I'll just verify my guesses first.

WTHAI 1: Gotland, the largest island in the Baltic sea.  NO
WTHAI 2: Indonesia                                                Yes
WTHAI 3: Peru                                                       Yes
WTHAI 4: Chad                                                      Yes
WTHAI 5: India                                                       Maybe
WTHAI 6: Germany                                                  No
WTHAI 1: Hmm, I spent a reasonable amount of time searching, but don't see it. I'm now no longer convinced it's on Bomholm, the other island in the Baltic sea.
WTHAI 2: On the "mainland" of Indonesia, the largest island.
WTHAI 3: Holy crap! All of Peru looks like your picture! I guess it's in the North, in one of the parks.
WTHAI 5: "Maybe" What does that mean? In any case, all of India is apparently made out of old river delta >_< I'm guessing it's near the sea.
WTHAI 6: Ukraine

WTHAI 2: On the "mainland" of Indonesia, the largest island. Only 17,508 to 18,306 islands to go. Get a hoppin'!

I think 6 is near Vilnius (because of the clue and the appearance of the woods around Vilnius). I just think I really suck at this game, I really can't find any of these :D

And with respect to the number 3 hint. Pan flutes are really popular in Peru. I checked out some of the find places of Peruvian pan flutes (temples) but it looks really different. Google loads really slowly in Peru as well and the colorings are quite inconsistent as well. No clue.

It did, and now I am done. I just spent an hour charting the area around Vilnius and if it is there I am not going to find it. I hope someone else find's it before I am tempted to go look again.

BTW: if anyone is ever lost in the area around Vilnius, give me a call since I am an expert now :)

edit:

I guess posting this on Mechanical Turk goes against the spirit of the game right? ;) (if it isn't clear: this is a joke)

Although the results will make the contest too easy, thus shutting this down, perhaps if you present it to those on Mechanical Turk in such a way that they would tackle the problem. I suggest doing so without mentioning this contest, thereby someone reading the rules may decide that it's not worth their time. If a solution is found by that team, imagine how that tool could possibly be used for other applications,  a tool that may otherwise not be developed for years to come if it weren't presented earlier. You may even be able to win a couple coins in the process. Good luck with this endeavor.

Either way, check out Syria Jordan really fast, zoom in, and see what I've been sifting through for the past 10 minutes.

I think I have accomplished 2 things:  wasting time, and getting frustrated with Syria's geography   ;D

Edit:  Amazingly cool fractal geography on a large scale, though.

Edit 2:  Nevermind, haha.  I realized I had scrolled down past Syria (had my tags turned off in Google Maps) and was looking in the Jordan area.

Terribly sidetracked at the moment, coupled with the development of a bot to gain a competitive edge.

I'd love to see something like this come back, with less opportunities for a bot to force competitive advantages.
