Post by: Harmond8897! on October 02, 2025, 04:18:18 AM
Hi, im going to apologize in advance as im going to guess that you get this kind of thing all the time - i would search  but i know litrally nothing about any of this so im struggling :/ a member of family who is now not very popular used my card to buy some bitcoin, when i confronted him he admitted it but he doesnt know how to withdraw it as its wrapped (CBBTC i think?) hes tried everything and it just goes in a loop of you need to buy 2 ETH (although always much more!!) im really worried because its left me scuppered for the month :/
Again i apologize, and any advice you can offer would be much appreciated :)

As i know CBBTC is BTC wrapped token issued by Coinbase, and you can check whether your family is using coinbase to buy CBBTC. Logically, once you bought CBBTC use your credit or debit cards, it should be delivered to the CB account connected to your card.

So you can try to ask him what account he used to buy BTC with your card. You can also check whether he's also move it out to his cold wallet or still keep it in his CB account.

My suggestion is that never try to 100% believe in others, though he's your family. I hope you can get your money back again.

Do you really believe what that person told you? Shouldn’t you first study or verify if what they’re saying is true? It’s risky to just believe right away, not because you don’t trust them,
but rather to make sure that what they’re saying actually has some truth to it.

And did you also check their Coinbase account yourself, OP? Just for verification purposes, to confirm if what they told you is true? It’s difficult if they only said it
but didn’t actually show you their real Coinbase account.

-snip- when i confronted him he admitted it but he doesnt know how to withdraw it as its wrapped (CBBTC i think?) hes tried everything and it just goes in a loop of you need to buy 2 ETH (although always much more!!) im really worried because its left me scuppered for the month :/
This doesn't look good, having something that requires that much ETH just to withdraw sounds like a "double-scam" attempt.
First is the supposedly bought coin, the second scam is the required amount to withdraw.

But your information is too limited for us to get the complete picture of the situation.
You may want to add the platform where he bought it, the wallet where he keeps the CBBTC, who's asking for 2ETH during withdrawal, etc.
Read this for example: Tech Support Help Request Format (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1741772.0)

This was moved to Altcoin Discussion board BTW.

Hi, so sorry for the delay ive been without data :/ yeah i made hime show me the account and give me the login details, ive changed the password / security questions - he bought it through the coinbase app then transfered it over to his coinbase wallet app (app now showing as 'base') its the actual coinbase 'base' app thats trying to charge me! when i go to withdraw it the 'WITHDRAW' button is greyed out and it says that i need to add £2 in ETH to cover "fees", but when you go to add 2, 3 or £4 it says another £X amount is needed)

This info changes things.

Firstly, you said "2 ETH" but it's actually "£2 in ETH".
So it's not as high as a potential scam and may be a legit claim.

Next, Base Wallet is actually a self-custodial wallet (cannot confirm though since it's closed-source)
But the main point is, sending a "wrapped" coin that's not from an exchange actually requires a few coins of the blockchain where the token belongs to be able to create a transaction to spend it.
Because the token can't be used as "network fee" and you only have tokens.

However, the issue is why it's requiring more than what it initially suggested...
Perhaps you've deposited the wrong coin? Because it's specific to the coin and network that's displayed when you tried to send. Sending another token will not work.
e.g. (if sending a token in Ethereum Network but there's no actual ETH in the wallet):
https://www.talkimg.com/images/2025/10/13/UMngmm.png
In this example, the coin that it requires is ETH in Ethereum Network and not something like "wrapped ETH" which is just another token.
And if you did deposit ETH, it should be visible in your Wallet tab as "Ethereum", if not, there's something wrong with your ETH deposit.

Note: if you're successful on depositing ETH, before proceeding to send, make sure that the recipient address and wallet/exchange of your wrapped BTC supports the Network shown in your Base App
or else, it will be troublesome to recover it or even be unrecoverable. In most exchange, the correct network should be selected.

BTW, Base Wallet (formerly Coinbase Wallet) should be legit as long as you downloaded it from official sources: link (https://www.coinbase.com/wallet/downloads)
(there no other way to verify it)

If you don't plan to hold your CBBTC or invest in cryptocurrencies, you can sell it or transfer it to your bank account (its value will be slightly lower due to the decline in Bitcoin's value).
