In theory it sounds great, but you know how theory isn't event close to actual results in most cases.

This is AMD attempt to make GPU mining viable I guess. I know Nvidia is working on something similar. Just wait and see approach. They could make a huge business out of it and provide somewhat legitimacy to the mining industry by naming a card specially for mining with no video output ports and eventually standalone cards. It's not only very interesting for miners, an extended/custom instruction set on the GPUs would also be very interesting for scientific calculations in general.
Imagine a 3000 core GPU running custom instructions as efficiently as an ASIC. I'd love to see that happening, the ASIC mob would run amok. And these cards would be available after announcement. You wouldn't have to prepay some shady shotgun shack company, without knowing if you ever receive your ASICs at all. That would actually be the best solution to get rid of the ASIC MOB.
