Ok how about some more legit people related to the principles of bitcoin. Include some reasoning.

Doesn't need to be people. The silk road and alpaca I think count.

Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press which allowed information to more easily transmissable, as Bitcoin is doing to money and as the internet has done in modern days.

Franklin used the press to print money and used leaves as a means to prevent counterfeiting, one of the first solid instances of anti-counterfeiting techniques in money that I'm aware of.

And what about Julian Assange?

As long a the bills can be determined to be legitimate through non-aesthetic methods (validation of balance sent to its address, for example), I would suggest allowing whoever initiates the "minting" of the bills to put whoever they want or whatever graphic they want on them, essentially custom-ordered at the time of purchase/exchange.

I was going to suggest Betty Boop... as a figure from the great depression era,  but it looks like someone beat me to it as far as using her image on money:

I guess she mightn't quite convey enough gravitas anyway ;)

Instead.. I'll vote for Alan Turing & Grace Hopper

I personally am against putting actual people on currency too.

Old U.S. coins used to have images of Lady Liberty, the embodiment of an idea, on them before they switched to dead presidents.

I think she would be a nice face to see returned to money. Or barring that, some other embodiment(s) of an idea (although such things don't seem as popular nowadays, not sure what would be both available and well-known.)

I would strongly recommend against using any symbology used by the United States or any other currency (both in current circulation and in the past).  The closer any Bitcoin bill resembles US currency the more likely the Secret Service is to investigate on charges of counterfeiting.

Why use the old convention of putting the face of our rulers on our coinage? Graven images were used to indicate the power of the ruler "I am Caesar and thus created this coin" and even contemporary currency uses the signatures of various Ministers of the Exchequer, Secretaries of the Treasury etc. to "legitimize" the people using the Centralized Authorities instrument of value, produced, maintained, manipulated and controlled by them, for them and without our input as the people.

Bitcoin, and the family of alt-cryptocoins demolish that fabrication, and I would hold that we don't need to use the tokens of value to glorify any individual, or to acknowledge authority to control our wealth. If we want to have colorful images, let's celebrate that which differentiates cryptocurrency from fiat, it is technological superior, it is digital, it is decentralized and it is not backed by the full faith and credit (and might of...) any sovereign State.

All bills have a public address on them that is visible, and is easily checked via a cellphone qr scanner.

I did a set of 20 of these for IBB with their logo on them. I don't think I would do it for smaller batches though as it is a little laborious to do.

Ugh.  I'm not in favour of the Gnu at all.

It has a strong association with a certain virally incompatible licensing system - which thankfully not much software in the Bitcoin world uses.

Even if (unlike me) you are a fan of the Gnu philosophy - why would you want it associated with Bitcoin?

How is it even relevant to Bitcoin?

I think gnu has been vital in the development of software technology, but I do see how it presents issues to this project. Keep in mind that many of the utilities used for cryptography in bitcoin related software are gnu based.

At the very least, use a shot of something who's smiling or otherwise happy. No matter how noble or respectable the subject, every piece of currency always has someone who looks like a log was stuck either going in or coming out. Bitcoin is a system that mostly manages itself, freeing people up to live their lives, so a symbol of joy and a live-and-let-live sentiment would be a genuine and welcome change.

Although Lady Gaga and Bill Cosby are unquestionably more qualified, Pierre de Fermat is my suggestion (if dead guys are allowed on the list) for his famous Last Theorem. He was amongst the first after Diophantus to study elliptic equations (sometimes referred to as elliptic "curves", used in bitcoin cryptography) with significant contributions.

Excellent suggestion. This is more what I am looking for.

That being the case, I present you with the following:

1 1 1 1 1 1 ...
8 7 5 1 2 4 ...
9 9 9 9 9 9 ...
1 4 7 1 4 7 ...
8 4 2 1 5 7 ...
9 9 9 9 9 9 ...
1 7 4 1 7 4 ...
8 1 8 1 8 1 ...
9 9 9 9 9 9 ...
. . . . . . . . ...
. . . . . . . . ...
. . . . . . . . ...

The use of the ellipses signifies that the number pattern repeats to the left as well as downward.

Without the ellipses, you have:

1 1 1 1 1 1
8 7 5 1 2 4
9 9 9 9 9 9
1 4 7 1 4 7
8 4 2 1 5 7
9 9 9 9 9 9
1 7 4 1 7 4
8 1 8 1 8 1
9 9 9 9 9 9

Anybody here capable of solving this matrix by putting it into an equation would, most likely, become famous.

The above is related to the post I've quoted. If perplexed, ask me what it's all about. Although it would warrant its own thread for the further discussion it'll ensue.

Only as a suggestion to put the numbers on the bills, albeit abstract. I did come up with those series of numbers. I have no examples of similar ones, but believe I can create others, as can anyone else here can do once they know how my set was generated. This set is special, though, and was created to help solve only one problem. I've been working on it for years, and feel it's now time to have others work on it as well to share the glory once solved, if that makes any sense.

Feel free to throw out suggestions and reasons. I'll do a poll after I get a decent list. Try to avoid national bias.

Hitler comes to mind as he was an equally bad idea as these bills.

Has anyone seen the boston city bills? Those things were nice looking. "Worthless", but nice.

Hey, Matthew, would you be so kind as to offer up a link to see what you're speaking of? I tried Googling, but ended up with nada.

I'm not sure what you're getting at, do you mean that should be on the bills, or that we should try to solve that. Did you make it? Do you have any examples of similar ones?

Only as a suggestion to put the numbers on the bills, albeit abstract. I did come up with those series of numbers. I have no examples of similar ones, but believe I can create others, as can anyone else here can do once they know how my set was generated. I'm still not sure what you are talking about. You're saying that if someone can figure out how you made it, that would be useful to you, or that you already know the solution and you want someone else to figure it out for fun? You should just make another thread about that, seems pretty interesting.

Anyway we should put more dead math-magicians on these. What about Pythagoras?

Sorry for the confusion, Mushroomized. Since you're interested, I'll start another thread. Strangely, it was the reading of Pythagoras decades ago that got me into arriving at those numbers, via Fermat that is.

I don't have the solution. Let me rephrase that. I feel I do have the solution, but need these numbers/matrix put into an equation, a task I've failed to do because of my limitations. The resulting solution will be helpful to everyone in the mathematical world. I honest believe that the talent needed to do this is available among us. I just couldn't do it myself. I always wanted the glory of being the one who discovered it and presented the results. As an older person, I desire to now share the glory. I just need a little help. We'll just make it an open source project where there is no real way where one person can say they did it, because of it being built on other's work.

The bottom line is this. If you gave me any power of any number, I can just about prove to you that there are no whole numbers that satisfy this equation: an + bn = cn

And interesting stuff about the Mushroomized series. Is there a more formal name or description; not finding anything specific so far (have to start digging around Fermat's equations now)?

Nevermind, found your thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=56387.0).

An actual mirror. It's people's currency, after all.

While I may disagree with some of the philosophy - I still recognise it's an amazing and important contribution.
Probably for this reason I'd find Richard Stallman's ugly mug a better fit for a banknote than the Gnu..  but perhaps he would object to his image being used on money anyway.

Maybe we should ask him to do one using only bitcoins ;)

The bitcoins on that one were added by me :P
