Im interested in doing an article on the top 3 Altcoins aside from Litecoin and Dogecoin.

I think it would be interesting to visit back to the article in 6 months and a year and see how they stacked up.

So who would be the top 3 contenders?

Primary alt coin would bee LITE

for others depends, doge is ok, still there are x11 coins that use less power.

For me it's

1) Quark
2) Ethereum
3) Zerocoin

maybe vtc, but it doesn't attract me much. I don't mine so don't care about it.

Based on volume it is pearcoin (not joking here :p ) , zetacoin, blackcoin.

But dogecoin and litecoin are much, much ahead any way.

VTC is mentioned twice so perhaps that is one of the contenders?

Peercoin? Namecoin? I thought those were the major ones along with Litecoin of course.

These  2 only exist because they are on btc-e, without it, they would be gone by now. No community, no projects, no dedicated members

For me, Vertcoin, Hirocoin/darkcoin (one of them HAS to come out on top), and blackcoin seems promising too.

ZETACOIN has grown 600% in the last week and has an amazing community pushing it that is frankly without match ... it already has an ad service that competes with Google Adsense and an Android wallet app ... and some huge news are coming. Don't overlook it.

Litecoin. The best known altcoin and for a damn good reason, very good support and a good foundation.
Devcoin. The fact it rewards developers with it's unique method of operating is very cool.
Peercoin. PoS mining is hugely innovative and awesome.

All these other altcoins? Well, they're mostly shit. DogeCoin does not classify as a top altcoin. Yes, it's popular, because it's a memecoin, but you can't call it innovative or anything like that. A top altcoin is something that actually brings something new to the table, has dedicated developers who aren't just there to make profit, and isn't controversial (because 99% of the time controversy does have at least some truth in it's roots).

My vote goes to Vertcoin.

Every single person will post the coin they are currently pumping and will leave.

Litecoin is the top alt coin , there is no precise second , but there are many innovative coins.

Dogecoin is at the bottom of the shitpile of altcoins.

I agree. Dogecoin is terrible and so are these shitcoins that people are pumping.

Litecoin is the first altcoin that went mainstream, nothing else.

Dogecoin is just hype that is lasting longer than average, and eventually will just fade away.

I'd say Darkcoin because it has a huge community and amazing new features (the most serious work for many months).

Vertcoin has a lot of followers, I think there is too much hype into that ASIC resistant, but in any case it's an interesting coin.

Myriad is also interesting, not sure why it's not getting more attraction.

Thanks for your take on it. Of course people will post what they are pumping and that only shows that they give a damn to post.
When you hear the same coins mentioned a few times, thats a good sign, albeit cautionary as it could be a sock puppet.

If you're writing an article, you're really asking for the two altcoins (other than Doge) that would pull in most readers. So, the #1 choice would be Auroracoin. It's not only picked up a lot of press already, it's probably the #1 controversial coin at BTT. Controversy, even if you're only reporting on it, means eyeballs.  ;D

For my second suggestion, I'll concur with a few others here and suggest NXT. Admittedly, I'm in the tank for NXT - I'm not in the tank for Auroracoin; I have none - but NXT would be the most fun to write about. As of now, it's the most viable extant cyber-2.0 coin, so you'll have a chance to explain to your readers about transparent forging, decentralized exchanging, etc. I suggest it'd be a fun write and, I hope, a fun read for your readership.  :)

DOGE is not among the top coins.
It's momentum might have looked great, but I see no chance of a viable market for any of those first generation coins, if they don't come forward.

The idea of innovation has to come to market now, to applications.
I can't see a substantial effort to turn these coins into payment solutions.

The only purpose of these coins is to make the quick buck, hanging on the edge of the seat.
The great idea is long forgotten.

Once there is money being thrown at coins with a modern concept and able developers, the market cap of DOGE and LTC could be bypassed in a matter of hours.

Just have a look at Aurora, how that set in. Many call it a crap coin and a scam, but it made it.

I'd consider coins with a real market a good call. POT of course.
And PoS coins, like ZEIT and MINT, I really like those two.

And the bleeding edge of development, which are coins based on X11.

Truth is, none of us know everything about every coin. There are so much that it is impossible to keep up. We have our favourites depending on when we entered the market and our personal circumstances. That usually led to investments and then we all defend those we are invested in, sometimes forgetting about other coins and their development.

My choices would be Darkcoin, Vertcoin and Mintcoin, but there are many more that are really interesting. Whatever you chose, you'll leave out great options.

This post will teach you about Peershares (http://www.peercointalk.org/index.php?topic=527.msg4249#msg4249), a project that received $500k funding a few months ago and has 4 or 5 paid developers on it.

The Peercoin community is smaller than LTC and Doge and  maybe a bit too quiet but it definitely has a community, projects, and dedicated members.

peercoin and namecoin are developing a lot in the background.

Pesetacoin - doing things right with the payment processor, getting merchants on board and a growing community; good name too.
Blackcoin - Gunning aggressively for #1 spot, they could be one to watch.
Dogecoin - Worth focusing on them just to see if the idea of community support trumps the lack of technical innovation with the coin, and to see what kind of staying power it has over time.

yeh these threads are always pointless as everyone just posts about the coins they have a vested interest in.

just check the markep capitalisation for the top 3 alt coins, that's probably about the best way to find out the 'top 3'.

did anyone else mention Darkcoin?!  that should def be in the top 3.  Did I also mention I hold a few DRK coins?!

DRK - If darksend works it will be in huge demand, even from users of non-anonymous currencies
BC -   Their multi-pool concept may change the landscape of crypto and force everyone into POS except BTC and LTC
MYR - Most undervalued coin at the moment. Multi-algo offers many advantages including fast tran-times

Well, if it is legit I believe marinecoin could be. At times it has a higher market cap than BTC.
