Had the windforce running over 1 year no issue....well one little explosion on one.

However msi 7970 - fans are crap . Just stop running and seem stiff to turn by hand. Not sure if bearings gone or just need lube.  This is on 20% of the cards now, and more waiting to fail i'm sure.

Strange because those fans are locked at 80% not burning away at 100% for months on end. These are only perhaps 4 months old too.

I saw some guy had just somehow bolted some solid copper blocks on to his and had no fans at all? i think they were 50oz blocks ? they cards looked suspended with ties. Has anyone else tried that?

Is that even workable?


The weight obviously looks worrying but could construct a decent frame i guess.

I can't find the site again now so i can't read up on the exact details... anyone else seen it?

The noise of all the fans gets a bit annoying after a time too.

I think of completely removing them and the plastic case and putting there 2x good case fans...

damn it i have msi r9 280x also, and yep i see oil dripping out now and then on those too. Did give my cat a suspicious glance until i noticed it was kind of an oily substance.

 What a bitch... ebay them and replace with something else i wonder...  grr msi cards really can clock up some nice speeds.

This method of cooling with fans is crap for mining the noise especially.  Water cooling seems to cost a fortune.

I really would love to experiment with one of these old 7970 msi and a big copper block.... see how that goes.  Probably with a bang i guess so will use an old mobo too.  

I wonder if even getting the outer casing off, remove fans, leave the bracket and strapping some monster blocks of copper  to it with artic silver between them would help it cool enough?

Even if that doesn't work alone just point some decent big fans at the copper blocks should work or not? my thermal engineering skills need a bit of dust off i guess.

Has anyone tried their own home made cooling system out yet?

Tear off the old fans and use two Noctua 92mm High Static Pressure PWM Fans.

Use small zip ties to hold the on.

Ugly as hell but keeps temps lower than a new Twin Frozr stock cooler and is very quiet.

You can splice in the original fan connector if you want to go all fancy.

Cheers for the tip. Yes, look nice - 6 year warranty too so must have some nice bearings inside.

Can't see the splicing going too well, will just try and power them from the psu through some molex connections or get a fan controller to control them all from one point. They all seem to be gradually grinding to a halt.

If i power the machines off, most i have to manually tap to get the fans started, some are okay once they get a bit of a bump start.

These msi are not meant to be run 24/7 i guess. Windforce have no such issues.

Once you use Noctua Fans, you'll never use another brand.

Top notch quality, with sealed bearing, massive air flow and the quietest fans period.

It's common.

MSI Twin Frozr fans are crap and will not last long with steady use past 56-60%.

They are not designed for continous use.

I have replaced the fans on 17 out of 26 MSI Twin Frozr 7950 I still run.

on the other hand, I haven't lost a single fan on 20 Gigabyte WindForce 7950's.

Never had a problem with MSI, but I had 3 Gigabyte 7950s shoot fireballs after a few months, all with different power and riser setups

go for the new vapor-x trix, has hynix it's basically the new toxic but with the old hynix memory

Ive had four MSI 7950's with no problems, two of which were running for nearly a year. They were all locked around 60-65%.  These cards run so cool that theres really no need for higher fan speed. I have had issues with sapphires tho :(

No problems from any of my Gigabyte Windforce.

The MSI 7950 I have is hashing 670 Kh/s, 1125 engine clock, 1500 memory clock, voltage 1088, @ 71C with this setup (approximately a week).

The fans on my sapphire cards are starting to go - I believe I'll do the same with them (but probably look for 90mm fans for them as the opening on the shroud is larger).

got one of these in rma after oil leaked out of fans and card eventually (2 months) stopped working completely.

I'm talking about the fans only, the cards themselves are wonderful.
