Title: Peercoin Weekly Review: v0.4 Released - Peerunity Announced - Chat With Sunny
Post by: river333 on April 13, 2014, 05:51:06 PM
Hi all, a lot of big news happened this week with Peercoin, so I just wanted to post this to keep everyone who is interested up to date (especially since there is a mandatory client upgrade coming up soon).

#1. Peercoin version 0.4 was released (http://www.peercointalk.org/index.php?topic=2473.0) this week. The new version includes UI usability features, protocol adjustment for possible future p2pool support, and bug fixes. Make sure you upgrade before the 5th of May.

#2. The new wallet allows easy unlocking for minting (http://www.peercointalk.org/index.php?topic=2612.msg22224#msg22224). To do this, go to the debug console and enter: walletpassphrase abc 99999 true, where "abc" is your password, and "99999" is whatever amount of time you want to mint for (in seconds). Make sure to clear your password afterwards (Ctrl-L). Minting helps secure the network so give it a try.

#3. Another exciting announcement (http://www.peercointalk.org/index.php?topic=2648.0) came from Peershares architect Jordan Lee, who is launching a new wallet and client that will support both Peercoin and Peershares. It is called Peerunity. This will be a community project that everyone can get involved in to add much requested features such as a minting button, coin control, nicer themes and language translations. To quote Jordan: "The days of slow or nonexistent Peercoin development are over."

#4. Sunny King also made a surprise appearance (http://www.peercointalk.org/index.php?topic=2616.0) in the chat on PeercoinTalk, mostly talking about how security in Peercoin is Proof-of-Stake only. This sparked discussion (http://www.peercointalk.org/index.php?topic=2606.0) on whether Proof-of-Work could also be used for security, instead of just distribution, but Sunny appears to be against this idea.

#5. The web developer for peercoin.net, Super3, is developing a new project for decentralized storage, that could compete with the likes of Dropbox. It's called Storj, you can read about it here (http://www.peercointalk.org/index.php?topic=2643.0) or see the website (http://storj.io/).

Finally, it would be great to continue to spread Peercoin on social media, so please subscribe to /r/peercoin (http://www.reddit.com/r/peercoin) if you haven't already, and follow Peercoin on Twitter (https://twitter.com/PeercoinPPC) and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/Peercoin). Also check out the forum: PeercoinTalk (http://www.peercointalk.org/).

Here's (http://www.reddit.com/r/peercoin/comments/22cbyc/peercoin_week_in_review_4/) last week's review on reddit in case you missed it.

Peercoin's minting is easy now, only one command line which is similar to edit Windows's registry. Next step is a "Minting" menu. Hope it will be coming soon.

Seems to be slated for the first release of Peerunity, a few weeks from now.

Yep. From Jordan Lee: "One button minting is already in Peerunity (thanks to sigmike and funding from Peershares) and we will be merging ppcoin pull requests in the coming days."

It's great to see Peercoin development speeding up!

Check this out...

http://www.coindesk.com/survey-results-96-of-merchants-would-recommend-bitcoin-peers/ (http://www.coindesk.com/survey-results-96-of-merchants-would-recommend-bitcoin-peers/)

It says that 25.88% of altcoin-friendly merchants would consider accepting Peercoin. This is something we can use to show payment processors that there is demand for Peercoin.

Peerunity and Peershares is showing that PPC continues to have one of the most healthy communities out there :)

Sentinelrv: Have seen this too. We should not lose this opportunity. PPC can be a great backbone currency, but a merchant network is very important for the stability and trust of a cryptocurrency.

Moolah just announced that they will be adding Peercoin to their merchant platform. So that is at least one major payment processor. GoCoin up next hopefully.

Ahh..

my bad..

I use a script to parse the block via RPC.

there is no getrawtransaction.. ?

In fact - no raw transaction processing at all.
