Title: What is the best 5870?
Post by: Dezeer on April 11, 2011, 10:42:42 AM
I am thinking of buying a 5870 to replace my 5850. There is three models that I have investigated little bit.

I have also a MK-13 that I either sell or use as the 5870 cooler.

MSI 5870 Ligtning
2x8pin power connectors
15 PWM + 1 NEC Proadlizer
good cooling
~300€
Might not fit MK-13 because of the VRM/ram cooling plate

Asus 5870 Matrix
2x8pin power connectors
12 PWM
2GB memory
adequate cooling
~360€
Should fit MK-13

Gigabyte Radeon 5870 Super Overclock
"only" 2x6pin power connectors
9 PWM + 5 NEC Proadlizer
good cooling to GPU, but not on VRM or memory
~300€
Should fit MK-13

I would expect them all to reach near 1000Mhz on GPU. Gigabyte has got 9 PWN + 5 Proadlizers so that forgives for the better PWM that MSI and Asus have.

What do you think I should get, and is there any other high end 5870s that I have missed?

I would buy the cheapest used reference board I could find.

I recently bought a new non-reference board XFX because I couldn't pass on the price. It cost one half of your least expensive option. Although I cannot adjust the voltage, it's running 950Mhz, no problem. Does it really make sense to pay twice the amount to get 50Mhz more?

Of course, I don't know the availability of cheap cards where you live.

The matrix is a cool card to screw around with but don't get it to mine with.
You're paying extra for very little effect.
