Title: Wallet.dat Which coin?
Post by: avw1982 on April 14, 2014, 02:02:52 PM
Hi,

I found on my USB stick a old wallet.dat. I don't know off which coin it is. Is there a way how I can check it? Or have I to get all the clients and check it. :(

First step: BACK UP. Make MULTIPLE COPIES.

When was the file dated?

If it was from say 2009 or 2010 then it's safe to assume it's a bitcoin one.

If it was 2011 it could be Litecoin, and if from 2012 it could be peercoin, or some other crypto from 2012.

First try bitcoin, and see if it comes up with anything. You could be in for a very pleasant surprise!

this only works on the assumption that txids don't change when you swap coins:
1. open wallet in litecoin (for scrypt) and bitcoin (for sha256), and note any txids
2. look for those txids in various block explorers.

Search for the transactionid in different blockchains.

Looks like you already found the solution.
