Title: I'd like to request a new section in Marketplace to post jobs that need doing
Post by: Peter R on April 14, 2014, 09:01:37 PM
To increase bitcoin adoption we must grow the bitcoin economy.  Our borderless, frictionless money is ideally positioned to help us achieve this.  I am trying to hire people from the bitcoin community irrespective of where they live, but so far it is difficult to get the people looking for work to connect with the people looking for workers!

I'd like to request that we add a "Jobs" section in "Marketplace."   In this proposed section, posts should be limited to those looking to spend bitcoin in exchange for a service.  For instance, today I am looking for someone to write me two Mathematica functions, and another person to find me a 7-letter vanity address using the split-key method:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=570548.0
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=570825.0

This is an example of someone willing to pay fair market price, and I know there must be people all over the world who'd like to make a quick 0.03, or 0.06 or 0.2 BTC or whatever the fair market rate is.  We just need a better way to connect these two groups.

I know there is a "Services" sections, but to me it seems like it contains mostly people offering services and is not really somewhere that someone looking for a quick and easy job would go.

There must be up-and-coming young programmers in Sri Lanka that would love to get paid 0.1 BTC to do some programming.  This seems very win win.

I volunteer to moderate this sub forum if that helps.

Isn't that the point of the "Services" section? Pretty much exactly what you are describing.

I think I addressed this when I said:

My point was that the "Service" section primarily contains advertising for "services."

The purpose of the "Jobs" section is to attract readers who want to offer their time in exchange for bitcoins now, but may not want to maintain a thread offering a service.  They can be confident that the threads in this section are written by people that want to trade bitcoins in exchange for a worker's time.

The "Jobs" section would also give readers an idea of what skills are currently in demand.

I read your post and the section about Services but I still feel a Jobs section wouldn't bring anything new to the table that the current Services section doesn't already provide. I see people offering jobs and looking for jobs that are for right this second. Maybe the admin or mods will disagree with me and see the originality in your idea.

This has potential. I can see how it could differ from Services: it would usually have one or two people per thread offering a small job (not a recurring service) on a case-by-case basis. However, we would need to make sure there would be enough people participating in it before it could get its own section.

Yes.  And it could be big jobs too.

I'd prefer to define "jobs" as some sort of skilled work that requires a worker's time such that (a) writing code would count as a "job", but (b) renting your signature space would not.  Basically, I'm trying to improve the SNR.

There is enormous potential for bitcoin to create a sort of "micro jobs" market.  Imagine a future where many people just wake up, say, "hmm, I want to make 0.1 BTC today," view a pool of posted jobs, find one that they can do, submit the work and receive payment.

If this process become highly efficient over time, I bet I could contract out over 50% of all my engineering projects on a "piece by piece" basis to people all over the world.  If this became more commonly used, it could greatly increase the GDP of the bitcoin economy, while giving workers greater geographic mobility.

I think the opposite is true.  We could make the new section with clear rules and expectations so that it is useful to the community.  If we make it useful, then I expect more people to start using slowly over time.

I think it is a good idea to separate jobs and services.
