Title: Current bitcoin debit cards options and experience?
Post by: CryptoPanda on April 15, 2014, 06:03:11 AM
There has been like 3 companies in the news recently that provide debit card that you can load instantly (or fast) by sending bitcoins. And then withdraw from almost any ATM.

Pretty cool, but has someone actually used one of those?

It appears that only one is taking users, and they are the only one that have revealed their rate which is 10%.

I haven't used one myself yet. One of the company like bitplastic.com offers them but there is huge 5% converstion fee and the card costs BTC 0.25. Also google about them because some people say that they are scammers.

I did all the research a while back. If you want to spend 1/3 of your bitcoin in fees just to pull money out of an ATM, then sign up for these ATM cards. I signed up, then when I realized how much the fees were I threw it all in the trash.

I discovered that Gyft is the best. You can anonymously get gift cards for purchasing almost anything, and then the gift cards work pretty much the same as your ATM card would. It's cheap too, you're pretty much just getting the gift card at the market value of the BTC.

Yeah gyft seems great but you are limited to just like 200 retailers and mostly buying online, right?

Well Amazon covers pretty much everything, however you can use your smart phone at check outs, they scan the gift card barcode that you pull up on your screen. You can check out this way at whatever merchants that Gyft has cards for. It's actually quite smooth.

Yeah Amazon is good option indeed!

Does the smartphone checkout with gyft card work in many retailers outside of USA though?

10% is just ridiculous, if it was just a flat fee, I'd think about it though.

Yes, like for 5 bitcoins = $5200 transaction you would need to pay BTC 0.5 = $260 fee? really ridiculous.

Actually I was impressed with Cavirtex, it's only for Canada, but I liked it!

Well it's new tech so it's hard to find a cashier who knows what to do. In the US it seems that when someone pulls out a phone to pay the cashier knows what they're doing, or if you pull out a phone with a boarding pass on it most airports know what to do, in the end it's just a barcode on your screen so all the cashier has to do is stay calm and scan it like she would scan a gift card, so you might need to talk her through it.

I believe we need to take the DEBIT Cards out of the BITCOIN World the whole Idea of BITCOIN is to be able to move away from the FIAT Debt Backed Assets! People need to work together to start accepting BITCOIN for various products and services and for the ability to pay your bills using BITCOIN and thus no need for BITCOIN Debit Cards!

Agree for the long term, however to be realistic we are going to need bitcoin loadable atm cards for the short term.

Dagensia's eCardOne seemed a good solution. However, they pulled out of the US market just days after I received mine. Prices seemed negligible. As I understand it, it was the KYC/AML crap that killed their participation here.
