People (especially that have spent money there) with accounts should put in a complaint about lack of option to pay with bitcoin.

That's awesome. Go you! :)

However the bitcoin community alone WILL NOT be able to do it. We need to really keep doing what we're doing and spreading the word to shops, app devs, web site devs, etc, whatever is needed, and spread the word.

Amazon is smart enough to know that the first batch of letters will be bitcoin people I think. Tom is watching like a hawk, this could be a turning point in his career, so he's going to play this as smart as possible.

Amazon not taking bitcoin is huge? errr OK

I think you'll find Taylor mentioned it in response to a direct question about it in interview. What else is he supposed to do? You are making out as if he held a press conference just to mention Bitcoin. He didn't it was mentioned in an interview in a question and his reply was 'we've looked at it and we don't want it'. If you think them looking at it is huge then you must get excited easily. Obviously they've looked at it after the exposure it has had.

It's optimism :) If the major papers are making a story on it... why not use it to your best advantage? He's the head of amazon payments, he's been watching it for a while. He probably has some of the best intelligence on new payments options of anyone on the planet.

If anything, Target should be looking at it.

They are still reeling from the credit card information scandal.  If they didn't have to store any information at all, they wouldn't have this problem.

Target should immediately set up an account with BitPay or Coinbase and start announcing to the world that you can now shop without giving your information.

Not yet, but Amazon has given BTC a thumbs up in it's favor, and basically laid out what needs to be done to get Amazon to integrate it.

Title is a little misleading.  By saying that they don't plan on incorporating BTC, doesn't really legitimize it in my opinion....

And he says there is no demand from his customers to use it, and that Amazon have no plans to do so.
That ... doesn't sound like four exclamation points great news.
This really does seem to be clutching at straws.

Going mainstream or something?  ???

Not yet, but Amazon has given BTC a thumbs up in it's favor, and basically laid out what needs to be done to get Amazon to integrate it.

Taking off the rose-tinted googles, here is what he actually said:
Quote
“Obviously it gets a lot of press and we have considered it,” Amazon payments head Tom Taylor told Re/code in a recent interview, “but we’re not hearing from customers that it’s right for them and don’t have any plans within Amazon to engage bitcoin.”

And here is the more pessimistic interpretation:
"Currently there is a lot of hype about Bitcoin, but not much more than that. Our customers don't want to use it, and we aren't going to jump on board just because tech blogs get all wobbly at the knees about it"

And, from the original interview:
Quote
I mentioned to Taylor that many industry execs expect Amazon to eventually build its own full-blown payments network to compete against the big credit card companies. Will we see a day when the Amazon logo appears at a checkout counter alongside American Express, Visa and MasterCard?

“If we felt like we could do a better job than Amex and Visa, and feel like it helps the customer experience, that’s something we would do,” he said. “But it would really have to be something much better than [what they do].”

Industry sources familiar with Amazon’s business believe it’s a question of “when,” not “if,” but Taylor wouldn’t provide any further details on the company’s thinking.

That seems far more likely than Amazon accepting Bitcoin.

True, but don't forget where we came from... 2 years ago BTC was NOTHING... now it's getting a lot of press. The establishment doesn't jump ship this fast... it takes time. I'm staying positive :)

Considering Amazon's partnership with Paypal, I really don't think that they will ever legitimize Bitcoin, as Paypal has declared an all out war against the former. Still.... this might be good news.

Where do I start?

I think it will be better to launch an online petition. Flooding the tech support staff's inboxes with similar mails are never going to work. What can't we launch an online petition, and get it like 100k signatures?

I hope Amazon never accepts bitcoins, ever. Because if they did, they would convert it to fiat by selling it outright, thus driving down the btc price. Look what happened after overstock and tigerdirect started accepting btc. Amazon is much bigger, thus will have bigger effect.

As mentioned elsewhere, people who spend BTC often buy it back.  Also, this is a necessary evil to go through until merchants buy and hold BTC

You think as BTC picks up they'd have more incentive to keep the money in BTC? Eventually people could get paid partially in BTC as well :)

You can, if you buy a gift card with bitcoin through gyft.com

But yeah, leave it to the cultists to put a positive spin on everything. I mean, I am bullish on bitcoin long term, but not because of a (at best neutral) statement by Amazon.

Very interesting analysis of the article and I like the way you read threw the lines of what we need to do to get it accepted by Amazon.  I think we need a large group of people in "hot spots" to get the word out in a unified push so to speak.  It would be good if there was a BTC awareness program for lack of a better term similar to the Sig programs here on the forums.  Just a thought.

At this early stage every time bitcoin is mentioned, even if it is bad press, it is still good.  Even Mt. Gox failing is good news in the long run.  At some point the bitcoin community will say, "We haven't had another Mt. Gox in a long time because ______________ so bitcoin is safe now and the Wild West days are past."  That is IF IF IF bitcoin can really step up and make sure that there aren't any more Mt. Gox scenerious.  We need more multisig and 2nd party authentication.

It is even good if a totalitarian government or 10 ban bitcoin.  That just means they are taking it seriously.  As long as the free world accepts (and yes taxes) it, bitcoin becomes stronger.

At this early stage, Amazon saying it won't accept bitcoin is a huge win because it means bitcoin is big enough that they had to consider it.  Someday, if customers demand and they lose business to Bitazon, they will be forced to accept it.

I agree but I think it should be recognized that BTC is in the early stages but also at a critical stage in some ways because alot of bad news is going to travel fast mainly because enough people are aware of BTC to the point that something to negative could be pretty devastating if enough trust/interest is lost IMO.

That will never happen. Even the retards at Amazon knows that Dogecoin is a useless shitcoin. May be they will encourage it outside Amazon, so that Doge will act as a parasite to Bitcoin and push its value down.
