Title: Get Avaaz to accept bitcoin
Post by: turvarya on April 16, 2014, 09:44:53 AM
Yesterday I received an E-Mail from Avaaz: They want my Money for some charity. After taking a quick look at the Website, I realized they are using either Wire/SEPA or PayPal. Since it's mostly Micro Transactions it would be perfect to use BTC.
Now I was thinking about writing them an E-Mail, but I do not really know, what to write them. I am not sure, if I am the right Person for that. If I overflood them with links to Websites nobody might read it. If I give them to less Information, they might not see the advantage. I don't have any experience about how to implement BTC-acceptance on a Website(I am pretty sure, it is quite easy).
Any suggestions on what to write in a first E-Mail?

I also thought about starting a Petition on their own website, but that should also include some(but not too much) information.

Petition is here:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/petition/Avaazorg_Start_accepting_cryptocurrencies_like_Bitcoin_for_donations/?nFCTmbb

Now that would be quite funny, I would definitely sign it!

If  you really want to give some why paypal is a bad option? And what is micro transaction under $1? so the fee would be just few 10 cents isnt much anyway.

I though that I would find a lot of people to sign it ;)

I am not sure, what you want to tell me. I am not saying Paypal is a bad option, just that it would be wise for Avaaz to also use BTC.
I for example, have deleted my Paypal-Account after they didn't let people make transactions to Wikileaks anymore. I think, there are enough people out there, who don't want/can to use the options Avaaz currently provide.

Ok, thanks. Less work for me ;)
Could you copy your Mail in here? Just wondering what would be a good approach.

SO, the question is: Should we start the petition asap or wait for the first response?

Think that one seems practical enough for people to request if its small change the utility starts to shine much more

I like this idea. I've been on Avaaz for some months now, signing petitions and donating money. It would be interesting if they started accepting bitcoin. Here's a question: they will save money on transaction fees but won't they loose money on converting from btc to fiat?

no matter how much information you will give them at first. You should  pay their attention to bitcoin in general and only then try to make them see the advantage of it

I wonder how many people on this forum know what avaaz is?

I would think a fairly moderate amount of users since it is libertarian by its original nature
With the new waves of users though it is an interesting question

3 days in and almost 50 signers!!! I did not imagine this going so bad haha :)

I think more grandmas started studying the source code of bitcoin than people who signed the petition :D

Probably just needs more press PR or something to get it rolling
Half the battle is getting information out

It got like 6 signers from reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/ :) And my post got a lot of down votes too...

Guess the community does not see the benefit of a petition like this succeeding.

I sent a tweet to major bitcoin figures like andreas antonopoulos but they probably see it as spam since I did not see a retweet.

If anyone has connections with someone who has a strong voice in the bitcoin community to spread the message, please do :)

Don't think this will go viral, most people do not care enough..

I really wonder, what People in the Bitcoin-World care about. Every Company/Organisation that accepts Bitcoin is a win.
In this case it is pretty easy to participate. So, why do People ignore it?

As I see on the forums (not just bitcointalk but others), most activity is around mining and following that is talk about buying/selling bitcoins.

between the lines you can sense the "get rich quick" idea :)

With the exception of certain big bitcoin voices like andreas antonopoulos (and some others) there is little to see in the long term humanitarian activity. Yeah there are people speaking out, but they do not attract the masses (and I mean the masses already using bitcoin, not regular "consumers" that never heard about it).

I think more time has to pass so people start seeing this bitcoin phenomenon as something more than bringing them $$$.
