Some people have been duped into downloading them after doing a search and picking the wrong one. I don't know why the official client was eventually removed from there, but I thought that it was a good idea.

There was some compromised sourceforge servers that scared developers back in the day. Ultimately it matters where the source and executables are hosted because very few people read code and can compile the source themselves so trusted repos are needed. This is not to say that one shouldn't trust sourceforge but that we need better ways of creating trusted repos and verifying code and I would assume that it was removed in part as one less repo to manage and worry about.
