I have one, maybe two beers on most days. I brew my own and drink it for the taste, not the buzz. I only drink when I know that I'm not going to drive, and I almost never drink socially. It's something I enjoy because it's something that I made and I learn from each batch. If I am around someone that doesn't want to talk about it, then we don't talk about it, if I'm around someone who's interested in the process, then that's what we talk about. I know it's not for everyone and I try to not wave it in people's faces.

I don't drink but don't have a problem with anyone who does unless they're trying to mock you for it. I hate the taste of alcohol. Brewing your own beer always interests me though. Creating your own stuff is always very satisfying, just like growing your own homegrown bud  ;)haha.

A big role, I drink since I was a child, it's a cultural thing here.

I don't drink at all, but I guess everything we consume nowadays contains alcohol traces and it add up, and I don't mind people drinking (and drinking moderately can be beneficial to the body), as long as they don't endanger others around them

Haha, that was a pretty good one I must admit. I am clean as a whistle - might occasionally go out and have a beer but I'm definitely not an alcoholic or even consistent drinker.

I hate scum who get drunk and pass out. I was at a house party and this hippie surfer dude type thinks he's cool gets drunk and acts like a dumb fuck and passes out. I kicked the shit out of him his nose started to bleed. I laughed and left that scum on the floor bleeding his own.

I also once smashed a drunk bitch's face on a metal rod while partying in a yatch, one of her tooth fell off, her gums started to bleed all over the floor as she moaned in drunked pain, we all laughed at her, took her clothes off and one of my friends peed on her.

I have a high tolerance to alcohol I don't get drunk easy. I think people who get drunk are scum and should be treated as such.

I used to drink almost daily before my marriage. Got married around five years ago. 3 months before my marriage, I decided to stop drinking. So... in the last 5 years.... I had alcohol only 2 or 3 times.

I don't drink regularly maybe once in a month or two but when i do I make sure drink till you don't give a F about whats happenin around you..! this is how it goes here..!

I never drink and i hope I won't ever drink . I believe its my lifestyle .

I'm plesantly surprised there's so many non-drinkers.

Plays a bit of a role, in that on Shabbos we have a vodka or whiskey shooter after service for a lechaim.  I make a point to stop at one (maybe 2 if wife driving).  Otherwise I will have maybe a beer at a family function.   

There is nothing inherently wrong with alchohol - but drinking to the point of being drunk is not drinking in moderation and rather that person shouldn't drink - period.

Some of the worst drunkards I know are Muslims. And I am not referring about the non-religious hip-hop types, but the religious ones who pray 5 times a day and go to mosque on every Fridays.

It's very popular in Bosnia also I know, even though it's a (mostly) muslim country. It's much of a cultural thing.

It plays a big part in my life, but I don't drink to get drunk. It's just something I enjoy the flavor of. It's kind of like how I approach food. Food plays a big part in my life and I really enjoy the flavor, but I don't eat food to get fat.

We eat food to survive. We dont need alcohol to survive.

i think i last had a drink on new years of 2011. so i don't really care much for it.. rather get high. on alcohol i just get dumber, at least when i'm high i am more creative.

probably far too much than it likely should.  There is a huge part of me that wishes I never started drinking.  I remember hitting the night clubs 6 days a week back in the day and then it was the cold beer store on Sundays.  When I think back to how much I've spent on booze over the years I shudder.

That is right.... Bosnian Muslims are basically Serbs who had converted to Islam a few centuries ago. Once the Ottomans were driven out of the Balkans, they didn't had much contact with the other Muslims. So they are very similar in habits to their neighbors (such as the Serbs, Croats and the Vlachs, all of whom unfortunately are their enemies.  ;D)

I don't drink any longer. But it still plays a role in my life and will for the rest of my life, as it has damaged my brain significantly and prob body parts. So even if you don't and use to be a drinker, don't think alcohol doesn't play a role in your life, it does and you will have consequences.

Alcohol was my best friend since i was 14  years old until 3 years ago when it destroyed  my liver .So enjoy your drinks while you can guys,i can\t anymore!

Saddened to hear that. Consumption of alcohol by minors always result in tragedies like this. Anyway... at least you managed to survive the liver disease. I know some of my friends who didn't.

I like to drink a beer  or two from time to time. But I don't like strong alcohols at all. Several times a year I like to get wasted by heavy overdose of beers... also I like drink 10-20 beers per day when I am on holiday. Not much really.

IMO, wine tastes better than beer. Beer is not as strong though. Vodka is horrible when it's unflavoured.
I cannot say I enjoy the taste of alcohol that much anyway.

sorry to hear about the liver. At least you're still alive. I've lost a few people over the years to alcohol abuse.  My father died a few years ago from years of heavy drinking.  Was a huge wake up call for me.  Don't drink nearly as much as I used to.



I've seen a huge increase in underage drinking where I live. Mostly binge drinking though. Seeing how much they can drink in a short period of time kinda stuff.  I just shave my head. It makes how much I used to drink when I was younger look like nothing.

A large roll indeed.  My family members tend to drink quite a bit and I'm able to drink a substantial amount myself.  I'd prefer not to drink alot but once I start it can be rather hard to stop at times. Usually I like a drink or two so I can "wind down".  But I find that I'll go overboard in a social setting quite easy.

Not everywhere. Try that in Saudi Arabia, and you will get 1,000 lashes. The migrant workers sometimes prepare home-made brew, but the Arabs (i.e the natives) usually stay away from it.

It would be nice to be able to socialize with people and let go without alcohol.  People tend to do and say dumb things when they get to drunk.  I tend to notice I socialize more when alcohol is on the menu which is a good and bad thing.

That's why many people drink. Not everyone wants to get drunk, they just want to become more social, let go of themselves, and enjoy the situation better.
The hard part is often to stop drinking when you've reached that state…

you can drink a low alcohol beer i usually do that when im on a social gatherings with my family or i put more ice than beer on a mug so that i wont get drunk and keep the conversation clear

And that's when it becomes a crutch / a problem because people need to be drunk in order to feel sociable.

people dont need to get drunk in order to be sociable there is a lot of way for people to get involve on some social gathering without getting drunk like start at good and interesting conversation between friends and family

Well i've learned my lesson and it should be a lesson for all that drink too much like i did,but is a long way to call me rude just by saying to enjoy your drinks.......yes alcohol  can be enjoyably if you drink it with  limit, for example a glass with wine a day is like a medicine for the body

That doesn't mean it's that hard to get a drink though, even if you're a muslim. I've heard a few stories from arabic friends I know. Maybe not in Saudi Arabia though, none of them has tried as far as I know.

Yes... In Saudi Arabia it is pretty tough. Never order alcohol under any circumstances, or you'll have a lot of trouble. If you really want alcohol, then just travel to the neighboring United Arab Emirates. There it is legal for the foreigners (banned to the locals though).

Well it sure looks like it is. I don't know what I would do if I couldn't get a drink when I really needed one.

Don't work in Saudi Arabia then. The salaries are not that great and they prefer South Asian slave labor to European and American workers. The climate is extremely intolerable as well. 

Believe me, there are times in life when you need one. Even if you did not drink your whole life. Of course I think of countries where alcohol is common and not of some strange ones.

Well... some people either smuggle alcohol from the United Arab Emirates, or make the home made brew. But the risks are there. If the religious police catches you, then the best deal you can expect is a speedy deportation to your home country.

There are also some non-alcoholic wines. They don't really taste wine (at least not the kinds I've tried), but they are quite good anyway.
The thing is that alcohol mixes with the rest of the tastes, and therefore adds to the overall taste. Pure alcohol tastes like shit though.

I don't drink at all, I don't like the way it makes me feel.  Usually after a couple beers I'm ready to go to sleep.  Then I wake up feeling like crap.  But I do smoke weed occasionally.  I also think it is downright silly that social activities are supposed to include alcohol.  What do people do on the weekends?   They go to clubs and drink.  Why?  The last thing on my mind after drinking is sex.  And when I drink I do not behave like myself.  So lets all drink and act like someone else and socialize, great idea.  Two beers for me equals a limp dick and bedtime.  Oh and I forgot, the music.  We want to socialize but we turn the music up so loud you can barely converse.  Makes perfect sense.

That's because we are afraid. We're not happy and secure with ourselves, and we want to be someone else. Do stuff you wouldn't do otherwise, and if you fuck up you can just claim "I was drunk".

Well when you drink you're more relaxed and so. I'm almost the same when I drink and don't. Although I have more fun when I drink, i wonder why.

Because your mind registers all impressions much stronger than they really are. The alcohol makes parts of the brain stop functioning, and the more you drink, the less works. So when you're drunk some filters and stuff stop working.
That's also why you die if you drink to much, because then the most vital parts of the brain stops working (breathing and heartbeats for example).

Well that's obviously basic knowledge. Drinking is okay in my opinion, although you should not get drunk (at least not often), or drink everyday. Beer and meat from the grill is a very good combination.

Yuck! Non-alcoholic beer tastes really horrible. I had it 2-3 times in the past. Extremely bitter and leaves a bad taste. I will never try it again. Alcoholic beer tastes much better, and is less expensive.

An extremely minor role now.
I still enjoy an occasional buzz, but it's not something I want/need to do very often.

Beer is horrible (even really good beer gives a nasty hangover if you drink enough), wine is rotten grapes, tequila has interesting potential to explore. :)

I do not drink alcohol much because of stench, but if you put that on the side, I love to think clear, and with alcohol you can not do that often :)

Then try either vodka or gin. They don't have the stench.  ;D

I do drink but i could live without it, not a necessity. But i drink with friends and have a laugh and socialize even though the drink is not needed it just makes it a little more fun an relaxed=)

i think weed is good subsitute for you reason . you can use this in daily life you can also enjoy your society

lol... from being addicted to a legal substance, to addition for an illegal one. Weed is still illegal in 99% of the regions. If you are caught, and if you are really unlucky, you might have to spend time in prison.

Yeah, you should really check local laws before smoking any… In some places you'll get away with a small fine, and in some areas you'll end up in jail for many months/years. I mean, check out the laws in Tennessee! :o

Many places have laws like this but they don't really enforce them.

Many countries have 'guidelines' or minimum/maximum jail times imposed, but they're not always adhered to. In the UK you can go to jail for dealing weed but you wont really. Most small time drug dealers just get a caution. Even people caught with substantial amounts have been spared jail.

Are you serious? I didn't even realize this. So basically the police officials don't really care about weed overall or just small time dealers?

If you're caught with a small amount you'll just get an on the spot wanring. If you're caught dealing a small amount they might take you to the station and give you a caution, but people have been caught with a car boot full of the stuff and avoided jailtime all together. It also depends on the judge too. They have been told not to send people to jail, but there was one case a while back where the judge  was very anti-weed and even made some silly comments that it's one of the worst drugs and sent someone to prison, but it was looking likely he was going to have his conviction overturned.

I don't really drink much but I'll have one if somebody buys me one. I like a beer everynow and again but dont drink to get drunk.

Same for me really but I usually go out with my mates once a month and we have drinks then but none of us are the rowdy drunks who drink to get pissed.

Tennessee doesn't really enforce it. I live in Memphis, and all you have to do is walk or go to the bad side of town. Some officers don't even patrol down there, and some of them sell it themselves. Many people are weed friendly down here. For instance, I know a old friend of mine got caught with some. All they did was confiscate it, and gave him a warning.

Should we call cider, beer, wine.etc as alcohol? They are mild beverages, with low alcohol content. Alcohol just happens to be present in them, and their taste is not much affected by alcohol.

I don't agree with that. No one drinks cider for its alcohol content. There are ciders with 1% to 2% ABV. I don't understand the need to call them as alcohol. Alcohol is just one of the minor constituents.

What percentage does a drink have to be then?

I dunno, I think usually when people drink cider it's to get blissed by the apple (or pear in this case  :D). And I think most ciders are more than 1-2% though.

96% jeeze. Can you get 100%?

Isoproponol is pure alcohol 100%, and is used as a pre paint cleaner in vehicle bodyshops. I wouldn't advise you drink it though as you will die way before it got you drunk.

Well, eventually yes, but that immediate percent drop only applies when it's more than 96% alcohol. So don't worry, you won't get less drunk from your vodka than you actually should be! :D

i try not to let alcohal effect my life to much. but this weekend while iwas drinking with my girlfriend i realised that i ddont like it. i smoke pot normally but this weekend when i got drunk i got angry and upset i didnt hurt her. i hit myself in the head untill i couldnt move my jaw and im bruised. i was mad because she didnt tell me something that i asked her about

It never made me aggressive, emotional yes. I'm feeling bad due to drinking this weekend though.

My Unlce died from drinking to much alcohol so thats another way alcohol affected me, Im sure someone here lost someone they love due alcohol

I do not drink alcohol at all for a very long time. Maybe just on special Occasions.

I have two of my relatives who died due to alcohol. The first was my uncle... who committed suicide under the influence of alcohol some 17-18 years ago. Then one of his sons died 10 years ago, after crashing his vehicle under the influence of alcohol. He was just 18 years old.. and had a bright future... but fate had something else in store.  :(

I learned to drink small amounts and not every day, so I'm OK for now.  :D

I've heard of the stuff, it's banned here in Canada I believe. The 190 proof thing reminded me of an interesting memory.  I went up to my Uncles when I was 13, I stayed there for most of the Summer. Hunting, fishing, etc.  He loved his 151 Jamaican rum. I had never touched alcohol at this point.  

He was partying it up out by the fire with his buddies, asked me if I wanted a drink.  I said sure, why not.  He gave me a shot of 151. Holy crap! I thought I was gonna die.

I think the worst thing I ever drank though, was moonshine my buddy hooked me up with.

It's sad but interesting that alcohol seems to run in families. I know several people who have followed in their fathers footsteps of drinking.

Its sad indeed to see so many young people who spoil their life under the influence of alcohol and still it keeps on increasing .

Alcohol is a freind of me sometimes when Im feeling in a good mood people abuse it for bad moods

Hmm... in 99% of the times, if one of the parents are alcoholic, then the children also gets addicted to liquor. However, the reverse is not always true. I have seen children raised in religious families who never touch a drop of alcohol, becoming total drunkards later in life.  :(

Circumstances do play role in addiction and peoples's weakness to deal with situations often leads them to drinking.

Of course there are certain circumstances that can push people into alcoholism but those with parents seem to have a predisposition for it, but anyone can ultimately turn to drugs.

Alcohol plays a 0 role in my life since I don't really drink.   I used to party way too much in college and as a DJ, but have since cut drinking completely out.  I am in much better shape now :)

You're in luck. I'm still in those days. I actually feel sick from drinking and thinking about drinking alcohol again, but I still do it.

None! Can't stand the taste or smell of it. I don't even like alcohol flavoured sweets or desserts :) I have had a sip of red wine & a sip of champagne & I think I can safely say, I'll never become an alcoholic :)

Alcohol used to pay a big part in my life. I drank everyday it basically took over my life. Then I decided one day that enough was enough. I was tired of it controlling me. I put it down and haven't drank in 18 years.

But jokes aside, I never had a problem with alcohol and hope to never have one. The best way to keep it that way is to drink as far as You feel in control of Yourself. Also keep in mind that celebrating with alcohol is a bad idea.

I actually don't drink that much, it just doesn't make me feel good. I feel like i'm vulnerable. Normally, I only drink at parties and even then i don't drink that much ;). It just seems kinda stupid that people drink until they are vomiting on a corner

Successfully quitting without 12 step programs is much more common than AA will ever tell you.

Most people just don't have the self-will or determination to quit and think they need help from others or AA or god etc, but they don't. It really is as simple as just stopping. Obviously it's not as easy as that for people who are alcoholics, but if you have the determination then it's all you need.

Strong will is one good ace in the sleeve to have. But from what I have seen people need strong kick or motivation triggered by some sort of event in their lives. I know case when man was walking down the street and flower pot crashed right before him. It would be his death if it was half second faster. Later after that event he did not drink any alcohol for the rest of his life.

well no shit, but they just aren't able to stop. their mind makes them think that they absolutely need it. nothing wrong with needing help. i'm not sure if a support group would help me though.

Except they are. Your mind is strong enough to overcome your demons as much as it is weak enough to let you have them in the first place. You just need to make your mind up and stick to it. And I didn't say there was anything wrong with asking or using help, but you don't need them and I think people just use that as another crutch really.

Honestly, you never had a drink for the past 18 years? I was also addicted to alcohol, before deciding to stop drinking it 5 years ago. After that, I might have had alcohol a maximum of 5 times (in 5 years).  ;D

The only time I ever really tried to get drunk was on my 16th birthday. Haven't really touched a drop since.

Sometime when I eat with friends I take a glass of wine, an apéritif, or some other alcoholic beverage, but usually I don't drink alcohol.

For me is a Social helper. It helps me be more talkative/outspoken.

In my younger days I drank a lot socially, but I don't get much out of the bar/club scenes these days. I go through periods where I drink only once or twice a month.... other times, like now, I usually have a six pack or two of micro brew in the fridge and drink one or two beers each night after work. :)

Are you talking about beers in american bottles, cans? It huge difference imo. I am only considered 1 beer if its half of litre. Other measurements are just not good enough. True manly beer is just half litre of more. If someone drik these funny small beers its just makes me say: 'meh' in my mind.

I drink roughly 2 bottles of Guinness FES a day which is better for you than normal beer.

Still isn't good for you though. I normally just drink with friends or at special events.

For a while there, drinking was playing a far bigger role in my life than it should have, then again, I wasn't working so I had a lot of time on my hands.  I found myself drinking a lot though at my previous job.

I started a new job just recently, and it it so far removed from the high school type attitude that was my old job.  So much drama where I used to work.  I make a little less at this point, but everyone has such a different attitude. It's a much happier group to work around.  Perhaps it's because the job is new, but I've talked to a couple people who have worked there for a while and they say they've had the same experience since starting there. Didn't bring up drinking at all. 

I really believe that where a person works can make a big impact on how much of a role alcohol plays.  I don't stare at the clock waiting to get off work so I can get home to drink anymore.

I know it isn't always easy to change jobs, but it's definitely something to look into if the daily drinking is getting out of control.

Usually when someone asks this type of question it means you might be an alcoholic. I read the OP and it almost sounds like you are trying to justify your behavior, saying look alcohol is not a big deal in my life. But something very hard to do for an addict is be honest with yourself. I used to think my gambling was only hurting myself but then I realized how messed up it had made me. It takes time away from the addiction to see the truth.

So I'd suggest trying to stop drinking for a few weeks. If you can do it and it's not a big deal then you're fine. If you can't stop or you're always thinking about it, talk to a therapist or go to AA.

I don't drink anymore.. nowadays if I drink 4 beers in a month it is a lot.. I had and still might have an issue with liquor though when was 16 I would binge drink many nights in a row and pass out just to do the same thingagain when I got up in a few hours .. I have managed to stay away from it for 6 years now but I feel the urge coming to have another blackout night one every few years is a good goal I think though lol

I don't like to drink alcohol because I drive a car most time in my life because I am doing the job of driver so it's dangerous to me and those who travel with me . alcohol also damages our lever so why we need to take risk of life :(

Drinking in moderation doesn't hurt the liver.  Hell, my Uncle drank a bottle of Whiskey till the day he died if I remember correctly.  I've known a few people over the years that drink to excess on a regular basis, their livers are fine. Anything in moderation isn't going to kill us.

There are many studies out there that say a drink from time to time is actually good for our health.

When alone I usually don't drink alcohol. But with friends its our favourite thing to do. Just get wasted. LIfe is too short.

when i was younger (well, 5 or so years ago), i was a heavy drinker. partied a lot, bars, clubs, late nights. i've kind of cut that out and don't drink socially as much anymore, but i still enjoy a cold beer after work most nights. :)

I only drink when I can't sleep, because I don't have acess to sleeping drugs. Most of the time it works. Not counting that, alcohol is 100% expendable for me.

It was not easy decision at the beginning but now I'm happy that I choose lifestyle without alcohol and never felt sorry because of this!

hmm, that's interesting. i find that i don't get very good sleep when i'm drinking. i mean, i pass out like a log and sleep through the night, but i never wake up feeling well rested (hangovers aside).

Agreed. I find it to be a slippery slope as well.  One turns into two eventually, two turns into three eventually, etc.  My buddy who is a heavy drinker, pretty much drinks till he passes out nightly.  Now, he can't sleep if he doesn't drink at night.  Really bad insomnia even when he takes sleeping pills.

To Brewins, why don't you have access to sleeping drugs?  There are many things one can take to help them sleep, doesn't have to be drugs.  I find a long hot shower or soak in the tub does wonders before bed.  I usually ake a little melatonin as well.

I think it also could be for some kind of educational or research purpose.
