Title: Account reanimation in vain - no answer from theymos!
Post by: LOBSTER on April 25, 2014, 01:49:04 PM
Hello,

My Bitcointalk account got hacked approximately two months ago. I was stupid to give the answer of my security question to the "hacker". It wasn't a discrete answer, so I could gave this information to the user who've answered me this. The "hacker" used a account with an activity of more then 900, so I trusted him. Daffy story, but it's too easy to get into accounts, there must be more security questions. But this is another topic.

Account: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=118045

After the hack, I've wrote many contacts, that they should immediately give a negative rating, that the hacker can't do any damage. That was successfully and he couldn't scam anyone.

Then I've wrote theymos to recover my account, based on this reference: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=497545.0
I've gave theymos all necessary information, signed addresses and everything else. I've also sent this message many times to him, but he doesn't answer / care about it.

What can I do? Should I forget my lovely Bitcointalk account? Is here anyone, whose account got reactivated?

Thank you for your attention

LOBSTER

You can sign a message using your known bitcoin address and send it to theymos.

Theymos will get around to your PMs eventually, he probably has a lot to go through daily. If you can't produce a signed BTC address message or PGP signed message, then you're probably not going to get your account back as nearly everything else can be hacked or manipulated.

Problem is, that address or PGP identity has to be somehow linked to the forum account, e.g. in the profile. If the hacker edits the profile, how would theymos know that it's the correct bitcoin address/PGP identity? Maybe profile modifications are logged…

As a precautionary measure, you might want to post a GPG / BTC address signed message somewhere in an auction thread. That'll do the trick and lock out any hijacker of your account. ;)

I've sent theymos approximately ten messages, always with the desired informations. No reaction / statement. This situation is just sadly, because theymos doesn't care about the forum and whose members.

Wait are posts made in the Auctions sub uneditable/undeletable by the user who made it? Because that's what I'm inferring you're talking about from your suggestion.

Yes, you cannot edit posts in the Auctions area.  Threw me for a loop first time I posted there.

Do you have a signed Bitcoin message from an address linked to the account, or signed message from a GPG key?

If not, then your SOL.

Even if you do the chances of getting back your account are slim, theymos gets hundreds of requests to recover accounts and only accepts a very small few where he is absolutely convinced beyond any doubt whatsoever that the person is the original owner.

Even if you do get back the account people will be less willing to trade with you in case your account gets hacked again.

Your best bet is to make a new account...

I've gave him so many proofs, signed addresses etc...this isn't the reason why. I think it's a bad excuse to say that he is so busy. He is immediately ready when someone wants to send him money (advertising, Donator/VIP status etc.) but if a forum  member need help, he doesn't care about it. This is my opinion!

I also don't want a new account. I've built up my original account a long time and earned also a small reputation...:(

That's a bit harsh I think. If I was running this as a business I would handle the business questions first. Then I would work on the user issues complaints, for which there are probably a dizzying amount.

It's not harsh, it's the truth. If he isn't able to manage so many problems here, he could apply for retirement, or hire more staff members with full admin rights (yes I know, it's not easy to implement this).
