Title: World's First Bitcoin Debit Card Releasing this June
Post by: coindozer7 on April 25, 2014, 02:00:43 PM
Xapo's world's first Bitcoin debit card should be interesting when it releases this June.
There were Bitcoin ATM withdrawal cards not too long ago but it didn't turn out so good (Initial cost, conversion fee, daily limit, plus don't work on most ATMs).
So, I wonder how this new Bitcion debit card will come into play to use this card instead of a standard bank's debit card or credit card at retail stores.

This looks pretty interesting... even if it doesnt work out fully it could still become a collector item like physical bitcoins

world first bitcoin debit card?

hang on i already have a debit card that my bitcoin value ends up on.. so i guess its not the worlds first.

it is also worth noting that all the service does is sells your bitcoins and puts FIAT onto a debit card...
... hmmm

so getting the logic straight, they put fiat onto  a debit card in an account which you control.

well many places offer debit cards and local bitcoins/exchanges put FIAT onto your debit card.

the only difference is that this service brings it all together, and charges you a premium. thus the idea is not new, its just automating and streamlining existing processes.

i can easily pick up a debit card from a retailer (known as pre-paid visa/mastercards) and do everything this service offers far cheaper.

so their sales pitch in general lacks many things

Wired has a large number of readers, so this is really good (repeated) exposure for BTC.
They have covered several BTC stories in the past.

Wow, this looks like it could really warm people up to the idea of using BTC for everyday purchases.

So can these guys prevent double spending?  By approving the transaction on their network, then sending it through Bitpay/the blockchain.  Seems like this would prevent the "having to wait 10 minutes to buy something for confirmations" problem.

I wouldn't mind having one of these bitcoin debit cards. I can then shop at supermarkets using bitcoin (indirectly)

I think the novelty of the idea alone will help these be successful in the beginning stages.   People will be buying these even if they don't use them to transact on a regular basis.

Where did you get that info? I was wondering if they would have global coverage or not so I asked them about that and another relevant question, this is what they answered: (The other question was how they would avoid the credit card company "pulling the plug" which we've seen many times when Bitcoin is involved)

Hi there LR,

Xapo is a global company - this debit will be able to ship worldwide.

We're working hard to insure that this doesn't happen. We think we've struck the right balance of having an incredibly experienced team, with the world's best investors, and are able to work with our partners in a way that most companies cannot. Although there are challenges that we won't be able to control - we're confident that in the end we'll do what is best for our customers (and that is everything we can to get the debit card launched).

Let us know if you have any more questions, thanks for being a customer.

The answer to the second question wasn't too informative, but they were pretty clear on the first. I've pre-ordered, let's hope they pull it off.
