Title: What happened at Gox on 2013-05-13 - (BTC Xfer Diagrams)
Post by: phelix on April 30, 2014, 08:46:19 AM
Created a graph from the leaked Gox data. Daily sum of BTC deposits and withdrawals (purple) vs. Gox price (red) vs. Stamp price (blue - also Gox price pre 2013).

Something seems to have happened around 2013-05-13... what?

Notes:
Aggregated data: http://blockchained.com/stuff/filtered_xfer_report_2.txt
Here is how I aggregated the data, you are welcome to reuse, review improve: http://blockchained.com/stuff/xferfilter2.py_
It looks odd there are so little coins on Gox before 2011-August.

Can you also add fiat sum of deposits and withdrawals?

Great visualisation.

Maybe this is what happened: http://www.goxdox.org/2014/04/mt-gox-was-hacked-in-2013-this-is-when.html (account inflation and withdrawal)

Fiat balances inflated in April 2013 (through fake deposits), purchases of BTC driving the price up enormously, followed by at first slow, and later fast withdrawals in April and May 2013?

About 300k btc was withdrawn in May after DHS seized the dwolla account. So everyone stared turning their fiat into btc and withdrawing. That's why there was a btc price premium on gox.

These have not been leaked as far as I know.

Great visualisation.

Unfortunately there is no proof...

Ahh, how could I not think of that. Looks like it was the beginning of the end. So the DHS exposed MtGox' fractional reserve banking practice. LoL.

Still, in January when the spread between Bitstamp and Gox grew it almost looks as if some people knew more than others.

Thanks phelix, nice visualization.

Would you consider adding it to the wiki we are starting to try and correlate these analyses at
http://www.reddit.com/r/mtgoxaddresses/wiki/analysis ?

It would be nice to start trying to pool efforts on this.
