Title: Formula 1 engine sounds ........
Post by: 1Referee on May 01, 2014, 11:33:40 AM
This season the engine sounds are making the Formula 1 less enjoyable, don't get me wrong, I still like it. But the sound is a very important part of this sport, and also the love for the car.

Every one know the sound of the ferrari, that's also why so many people love the car, change the sound and it's not that attractive anymore. ( Glad ferrari will not do this :) )

This video compares sounds from 2013 and now this 2014 season http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jS4Dh_EAfJI

Funny thing is, in that video you see people in 2013 protect their ears with safety headphones, and in 2014 no one is using these headphones anymore  :D

Does the new sound not turn you on anymore and ruin your stroke?  :D Why don't you mute the volume and make the engine noises yourself with your mouth instead?  ;D

F1 Been dead for me for a while, the cars getting slower and slower, team innovation is very restricted, and basically the one who got a tiny technical advantage in his design wins the championship that's all to it nowadays, cars are not even allowed to touch each other ...ect

It"s nice that security was increased, that's a good thing, but they are killing the show with all the limitations in place nowadays

Why did they change it?

Some engines just make different sounds.

Why did they change it?

I haven't watched F1 in years, but I guess improvements/changes in engine technology will alter the sound they make. I don't think the engine sound is that important to them to be honest. I'm sure the previous F1 engines sound much different to the ones 10 years ago anyway.

LOL , some cars are very sexy, the sound is essential  ;D I'm not good with sound mimicking :D

@ kuroman

Yes, the cars this season are very slow compared with previous seasons. But alteast people can't complain about Vettel winning nearly all races  :P

Is there a video comparing the sounds of the two, or maybe the sounds throughout the F1 history?

Haha I guess it does sound very different. They sound more like passing jets now or something.

Wow, I'm not a fan of forumla one but that is a big difference. The sound of the engines is kinda iconic and just doesn't sound right.

Lol I don't know if I like formula 1 or nascar better. I like mascars commentators more than f1 and also there seems to be more action. If f1 was more like nascar is watch it

You think driving round in circle is exciting or has action? It's only got action when they crash.

My issue is that F1 has become more of a spec race over the last few years.  Same tires, same fuel, maximum fuel flow rate, etc.  You need a battery powered hybrid to be competitive at all.  The fastest cars come from the teams with the largest budget to work out the best aero.  The result is less innovation that makes its way into road-going cars.

I liked the days when it as 3L normally aspirated or 1.5L turbo. Cylinders, fuel load, fuel mix, etc were open.  The 1.5L Turbos running something around 75 PSI boost on toluene fuel were insane.   They were cranking the boost up to get ~1500HP for qualifying, but had to dial it back to make it through the race.  There is no coincidence that development of turbo technology for road-going cars was exploding at the same time.

But isn't this the case with most sports that rely on such technology? You could also apply it to other sports like football. The teams who can afford the best players get the trophies.

I liked the 2013 forumla 1 sound better 2014 is just to quite and not so exciting to watch, bad for spectators  :P

My issue isn't that the teams with the development money win.  This is the top tier.  They should have the option to spend as much as they want to develop the best car within a broad set of rules.  I can't stand this "you must use the spec tires, that are designed to artificially degrade faster than necessary", "don't rev higher than this", and "don't consume fuel faster than this rate at any point", silliness.

My preference:  Specify overall car dimensions, weight, safety components, tire dimensions, wing area, and total fuel allotment for the race.  Let the engineers work the rest.

Oh, and back on topic :D  I think last year's normally aspirated cars sounded better (although I have not heard the '14 turbos in person yet.)

but that will change soon again, once one team figures a loophole in regulation to have an advantage in their design and wins every race again .... :(

It's like they put a prius on the track..basically driving by making the sound - "I'm gayyyyyy" - by Jeff Dunham

Funnier if you watch the video.

It is not so interesting as before.
I hope better times will come again.

Went to a Hockenheim F1 race once, and that loud noise is my abiding memory!

Im much more into my MotoGP so havent rly followed F1 closely for a few years. Turned the race on a few weekends ago, laughed at the sounds and turned it off again.

Most boring motorsport now with no noise!

No worries.  Once someone finds an advantage, the FIA restricts it into oblivion.

I watched video and it is true. Discrepancy in sound engine tone is really noticeable. But maybe it is good change. People on the stands are able to watch race without covering their ears or earmuffs.

50% of this sport has to do with sound, people love the sound of a "crying" Formula 1 car. I don't think we will see a change for next season as old men in $5000 suits will not change the rule directions that easy.

They'll restrict the advantage for next season but the damage would be done anyone as proven in recent years

I am not expert, but old engine sound was more expressive and a lot lauder. If people really did not complain about that loud engine tone there was no reason to change it, I think. But maybe new cars are faster? :D

engines are still as loud of not louder, since there is no sound restriction in F1 and basically the engine exhausts are deristricted and nothing on their way.

What makes the sound different is the pitch which was much higher in the past, the engine are V6 in stead of V8 and V10 but more importantly, they are restricted in terms of RPM (16K only vs the 20K or even 22K in the V10 Era) and turbos increase pressure in the engine ...ect .

The new cars are slower, since the new regulation reduce aerodynamic capabilities of the cars and rules for fuel consumption /fuel limite, and engine limite has been added, there is one small saving grace that might add a bit of show, is the electric boost from kers system, the electric engine are much more powerfull, and the power system has been upgraded, so the boost might allow pilots to past each other

what? formula 1 is one of safest car racing categories available, it is indeed more demanding on the pilots mentally and physically and it is dangerous but not more dangerous than other car racing disciplines.

And old days the risk was considerable and it was like gambling but it isn't as much the case anymore

First FIA wanted a quieter, more efficient engines. On the first tests everyone in pit lane was glad because they didn't need to wear earplugs.
Today many people say must be changed and it must be louder but I think its ok as it is. In the first race in Australia I was able to hear tire squeal, turbos whining, and people cheering in the grandstands. So I say lave it as it is

Good news for the fans, the FIA is currently working with experts to find a solution for the engine sounds, after many fan complaints.
They are probably going to change something in the exhaust, to boost the volume considerably.

Yes and the solution may look like this

Seriously? Formula 1 is one of the most expensive sport in the world and the decided to make something like this?

Meh, if it makes it sound better I dont mind that.

The problem is that it has to be fairly simple as all the teams have to unanimously vote for it and for the rule change.

They can't make a lot changes due to the rule policy, perhaps in the new season we might see something else.

Something is better than nothing :)

Actually Mercedes been testing an exhaust design that will allow a "boost" in terms sound, this is a technique that is used in turbocharged sport cars and supercars such as the Pagani Huyara for example

I agree with you. But they changed too many things too fast. Problem is that is not anymore so exciting as before. Maybe they will do some changes again. Manual gearbox can be great thing if you ask me, because last years I think people win on weird way.
And all is in electronics, so can be manipulated. But as I said I do not know. It will be better if they put manual gearbox, spirit of old times will be great refresh for me.
But who knows maybe they do something even better.
