Title: Bitcoin Online Wallet Safe?
Post by: marife01 on May 04, 2014, 07:06:30 AM
Those who have BTC online wallet, how secure it is?
I wonder how safe it is to have an online wallet for Bitcoin. Any instances that your online wallet was hacked?

An online wallet is never 100% safe, some are better than others
I use blockchain, but please don't keep large amounts in online wallets
Bulk of holdings should be held offline

Better store your BTC in an offline wallet. There is enough to read on this forum on how to store your BTC. Personally I do keep a small amount online (exchange) but that's because I daytrade and don't feel like sending my BTC back and forth...

Thanks. Does offline BTC wallet 100% safe?

Never put any significant amounts of coins in any online wallet. Keep multiple offline wallets with you and store the bulk of your coins in them. There are large number of options including USB sticks and paper-wallets.

Nothing is 100%.     99.999999%,  perhaps;  how many 9s depends on how strong your military grade physical security protections,  how strong your vault doors, and how effective the armed guards and security support teams you have helping to protect the  vaults  holding  the various segments of your wallet's private key.

It's as secure as the strength of your private key and how securely you generated that private key and kept it secret -- and the strength of the crypto algorithms.

A keypair generated using a flawwed random number generator, or based on a low-entropy passphrase  ("Brainwallet") may be guessable and less than 99% safe.

Online and offline wallets can only ever be as safe as you are. An online blockchain wallet is probably safer for a newb than someone who has zero protection on their computer, providing you set up all the provided security features - 2 factor auth and a second password etc.

For wallets on your computer, your computer might be hacked.

If you mean paper wallets, these are as safe as you make them safe. If you do it right, almost 100% safe

Thanks, nice that I could set up multiple online accounts since that is easy for  me.

You made your point clear. Thanks. :)

If you are going to use an online wallet at least make sure you have 2fa enabled on it.

As far as I know, Blockchain is fairly secure especially if you use 2FA. However I would be careful storing large amounts there - if there is a hole you won lose too much.

Read around or do a search for lost BTC and you will see that the majority who have lost BTC were using online wallets.

Like other people said above, online wallets are good to use for online purchase but It's not a good place to keep your main bitcoin funds as in a bank. There is a risk to get your funds hacked on online wallets while you can keep your funds safely offline on your own risk. If you download something, do It carefully as you can get a key logger or a virus which could steal your bitcoins also. So in conclusion offline wallet is 100% safe If you keep your computer safe from viruses.

I have so far found blockchain to be safe with 2FA
I never use the mobile app though as to my knowledge that's how most transgressions have happened

I wonder how safe it is to have an online wallet for Bitcoin. Any instances that your online wallet was hacked?

Our new (not yet fully launched) site https://BitArmored will be 100% secure for cold storage. Clients can transfer funds from their online hot wallet to cold storage and back.  Deep cold storage funds are held offline in a paper wallet.  You can view your cold storage wallet online to ensure your funds are actually there. You can even request an encrypted flash drive containing your wallet sent express mail to your home.

https://BitArmored.com coming soon!

This seems like a VERY BAD idea.

dont store your bitcoins online. just store online what you can afford to lose or you need for a little purchase.

online wallets are about as safe as giving money to your distant cousin whom you rarely see or never seen face to face.

you may know them by name, have heard all about how responsible they are and how qualified they are through friends, family or just google searching their name.

but ask yourself would you really give more then a couple hundred dollars to your cousin?

Always best to keep things locally - why trust a web site unnecessarily?

Made myself a nice thread over here:

April 30th. The previous hack happened around January or February.

Read the story in that link and it is alarming that even those wallet that should be secured are being hacked. Even those with very small balance/amount.

Okay, taking note of all the tips on here.
I hope that as BTC is getting older in the web, there will be more secured places for it.
