It depends on criteria - daily trade volume, market cap, recent changes in price?
I would say Litecoin, Blackcoin.
Much can change with scrypt ASICs.

The real questions is, what is bitcoin second to?

Darkcoin. The only privacy-centric cryptographic currency.

Have a look at Monero then, nothing comes close when talking about privacy

LOL I forgot about Dogecoin, it has very active community, I think it's more similar to Bitcoin's first years than any other crypto.
Darkcoin/Monero are also very interesting because of their anonymity. Darkcoin is more popular right now but I think Monero is better in terms of technology - it just needs GUI wallet.

As I been looking at altcoins recently I think only two come to mind Litecoin and aurora

Based on my 12 months of research, I think probably what we'll see by end of 2015 is a top four consisting of Bitcoin (BTC), Goldcoin (GLD), Litecoin (LTC), and Dogecoin (DOGE).

LOL, nice trolling. Goldcoin is a scam and dead, Litecoin is failing because it's about to get taken over be ASIC's, and Dogecoin is like a toy coin, only for people new to cryptos and it's dying slowly...

what happens when monero is cloned and also have something like a normal windows qt for people to use?

that will be the first coin with that tech to take off.

Time to come out from under your rock.  ::)

Goldcoin is certainly not a scam and far from dead, it's about to release the first ever multi-currency java client this month. Litecoin will benefit from ASIC and Dogecoin is getting ready to gain even move mainstream exposure thanks to a new Nascar sponsorship. http://www.cnn.com/2014/04/24/tech/web/nascar-dogecoin-talladega/

there's only 1 coin second to bitcoin and that's Litecoin , no other coin comes close in 24 volume or marketcap.

aurora was a premined pump and dump.

Lol? Goldcoin isn't a scam/dead, doge hasn't been slowly decreasing in value everyday for the past few months, litecoin hasn't decreased 40% in value already? Now you're definitely trolling...

but I do agree dogecoin is solowly dying.

I'm sorry, but anyone that thinks Dogecoin is dying must not have access to mainstream news coverage.

Just because there's someone being sponsored by dogecoin in a hardly watched nascar race, doesn't mean that it's price would go up at all, especially because the guy driving the "dogecar" is a newbie and was like in 28th place in a previous race if I remember correctly. Look at the doge halving, dogecoin fans were saying the price would go up because of the halving, it actually went down!

a few publicity stunts won't save your poorly coded coin , unless they merge mine with Litecoin they are screwed , Coblee explains why here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5X8OFMcc7Q around 37 min

Cryptocurrencies are down across the board.

whats about dogecoin?

To answer the thread title: Litecoin. No question about it.
Doge is behind Litecoin.

Really no other altcoin is super close to these 2 alts.

DarkCoin will be the best. I thrives of what made BTC strong. Being, or at least attempt to be untraceable.

While I'm going to admit that DARK is not fully untraceable just yet. It's heading in the right direction. DOGE coin is risky with the upcoming ASICS.

It takes time to implement completely new technology. Someone from Vertcoin is working on a GUI wallet

I think the current charts are represented well.   I think in a year the top 10 will still include Bitcoin, Litecoin, Doge, NXT, Peercoin but in what order I we are not sure.  I think the other 5 of top 10 will be a bit of a mystery but I think there will be more and more POS in the top 10 and less and less POW.  The exception would be that somebody comes up with a new and novel approach to POW.  Anything that is a copy and paste of bitcoin, but that is just and only faster, or safer, or more anonymous, or some other feature that people tout as the killer feature just won't make it.  A new POW that is all that and more might though.  I really think that any of these country coins or any other meme coins won't make it.  There is maybe a chance that if a major celebrity who was very well loved launched a coin, it might just work.  But really there is no point for them.  These developers that launch new alt coins are trying to make $10,000-$100,000 from launching, pumping and then dumping.  For a celebrity, that could be a night out at the club.  Seriously.  It simply just isn't worth their time.

Its true you can use different ways to judge what is 2nd to Bitcoin ie Market cap, etc.

And this seems like a place for people to push their shitcoins and the OP saying auroa coin is laughable along with others saying goldcoin etc.

I think the general big picture is that the 2nd to Bitcoin is the 2nd Generation coins like NXT, Ethereum, Exocoin, Qora etc who are pushing way past Bitcoin in terms of function.

There are some nice simple coins like Darkcoin but they hang onto only one innovation that others will implement in time. Mastercoin etc included. And also in the end usage is what defines a currency not function so Dogecoin has some merit, but come on now lets be serious..

So in conclusion for now I think a level headed person would have to agree NXT is 2nd to Bitcoin. It literally is the NEXT big thing. I'm sure some will disagree but then I can't be held responsible for all the stupid people on here.  8)
