Title: POLL: Would you like Bitcoin Core to switch to µBit as the default Bitcoin unit?
Post by: klabaki on May 06, 2014, 04:43:43 PM
Would you like these changes in Bitcoin Core?

[1] Replace "µBTC" with "µBit",
[2] replace "mBTC" with "mBit", and
[3] switch to "µBit" as the default unit.

I know that we had a lot of discussion about units in the last days and many of us are already tired of discussing.
However, apart from a lot of talk, nothing has happened yet.

There was recently a proposal on reddit which suggested to use "µBit" in contexts of formal writing and official places:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/24rq1b/%C2%B5bit_proposal_%C2%B5bit_becomes_official_name_for_the/

The reddit proposal tried to be a good compromise, so I thought there should be a poll about this.

This poll is worded in a way to suggest concrete actions to the Bitcoin Core developers. Of course, the developers are independent and are not bound to this poll.
However, from what I have read from them in the past, I'm pretty sure the developers would adopt a change if the community expresses a clear wish to do so.

Personally I prefer another name for this unit, however I think that this change is an improvement over the current situation.
The current situation is that Bitcoin Core calls the unit "µBTC" which is so long-winded that no one really uses it.

Your question is not clear for me.
Do you also mean that µBTC == µBit?
If not, you should make it clear to other users that there was a discussion about bit being btc/1000000.

It does sound a lot better to me. µBTC and mBTC are not really good for everyday use. µBit and mBit are much easier to pronounce.

Yes, I would prefer that. But in future they may have to do it anyways when Bitcoin's price rises substantially. People may not like a price tag of 0.0000013 Bitcoins on a pair of Armani shoes!

as long as µBTC=uBTC=ubit (pronounced you-bit instead of mew bit or mew BTC)

Didn't 80% of the forum already agree to move to bits?

Stop with the asinine polls people, we've already reached a consensus.

No.  That was a poll about the *size* of the new unit, not the name.  "bit" as the name is only supported by about 40% of the forum.  It has a plurality, not a majority.  Though "bit" will probably win because it is a retarded idea supported by stupid people.  Stupid people usually end up getting their way.

Not really, 78% agreed with 1,000,000 bits being 1 BTC. It was not only about the size, but also about the name.

That is completely false.  I know, because you are miscounting my vote.  Your faction is falsely claiming a consensus where there is none.  The majority are opposed to "bit" as the name.  We just can't agree on what we prefer.

Votes are in. You lost by a long shot

Yes.

1 µBit = 1 µBTC

The only difference between µBTC and µBit is that "µBTC" is the current word, and "µBit" is the proposed new word.

For the reference:

1 000 000 µBit = 1 BTC

If not, [...]

See above.

Despite the shrill shills, no poll I have seen can claim anything with regard to 'x% of the forum'. Has any of these polls garnered votes from more than 1% of the forum?

i like the use of Bits/ubit

this is an example of taking the things that work in the altcoins (dogecoin quantity numbering psychology) and incorporating it into bitcoin

Stop with the asinine polls people, we've already reached a consensus.

The other polls were about how to call this unit in colloquial language.
However, this poll is about how to call it in Bitcoin Core.

These are two entirely different realms.
Bitcoin Core is expected to have a high degree of security and accuracy.
You wouldn't expect to find a colloquial term there.

As a comparison: Would you expect to see the word "bucks" in GNU Cash??
If the answer is "no", then there shouldn't be the word "bits" in Bitcoin Core.

You may call them "bits"/"bucks", though. ;)

No.

Because Math:

If... µBit = µBTC, then Bit = BTC??

Popular consensus:

Bit == µBTC

This is a totally trivial recompile that can be done right now if you want it, since the client already supports all three units mentioned. All this would be is changing the user interface text.

The pronunciation is not written in the source code.

You may pronounce it whatever you want. :)

I'd like the Bitcoin Core to switch to mBit as the default Bitcoin unit. uBit is very far away, and pretty much worthless right now. And there is not much difference between a Satoshi and a uBit (just 2 decimals).

Exactly! Quoted for truth.

But the question is: Will we find a compromise?

Not yet.

I like how It Is, 1 Bitcoin as a biggest unit and  I don't see a problem with It.

That will be the best thing to do as of now. If a consensus can't be reached in the near future (I see no chances), then the status quo must be maintained. So the best solution is to leave it as it is now.

Seems like a good idea, mBit rolls off the tongue a lot easier than mBTC

uBitcoin is cents now. For me is the same as bitcoin in the 100's but with inverted signal(eg, makes the coin seems worthless for being so cheap). Better leave the change for when btc in fact skyrockets.

And mBit and uBit might cause confusion with the quantum computation's qBits, so not sure if it would be a good idea put them as official names.

This thread is pointless.
Bitcoin is open source, If you want those changes make a soft fork yourself.
The changes you desire wouldn't take long.

Of course, this can be done individually! In fact, many people already did that.
But that's not the point of this thread.

The question is: What should be the official version, i.e. the version that the upstream developers will distribute?
I don't think it is pointless.

It is pointless.
You propose that bitcoin's official developers drop the name btc and make unneeded changes to how a persons bitcoins display.
It will never happen, Bitcoin is btc, no reason to change. It would only serve to confuse people.

The answer is: whatever they choose, regardless of what this needless thrashing thinks it concludes.
