Title: Job Offer Pending Background check and what should I do
Post by: sparkleboy on May 08, 2014, 11:12:43 PM
Hey yall!

I'm in a conundrum, looking for a little advice.

I just received an excellent job offer for a company I would die to work for.. but it's contingent on background check.

I got a DUI 3.5 years ago, and there's a little travel involved with the job, so I'm worried they might mark me as too much of a liability for insurance.

The thing is.. I need to relocate, and I am in desperate need of a new car. My car waterpump blew on the way to my last interview and I pushed it anyway so I wouldn't miss the interview. Thankfully it was 0ºF, no suspected damage to the engine. It was steaming and misfiring. I thought for sure the car was done for.

So, what if I sign on an apartment and worst case scenario, they rescind the offer 3 days before I start?

I'm handing in my paperwork to HR tomorrow. Should I bring the misdemeanor to her attention and ask for a confirmation whether everything checks out or not? I start in 2 weeks.

Whatever you do, don't lie because they will find it.

Did they ask for that information on the background check sheet ? They usually want to know about everything before they even start looking

I had this before, I would tell them your situation. It's better they hear it from you than find via the background check

For sure. I have had 2 big co-ops since the conviction and obviously both places were not worried about it. It was never brought up in my interviews so I wasn't going to bring it up randomly. Neither job included any travel, though. It's a college grad job and I will willingly use my own car.. I'm just worried they will say something like.. "We can't insure you for a company or rental car, so we can't hire you." The travel will be local, with 1 international trip a year.

Stuff like that happens right? Or am I worrying too much?

I was recruited and only had to fill out a very basic application, so this is the first time I had to write anything about convictions. In my first interview HR even said don't worry about filling out references or anything like that since it was just a 1st round interview.

So now that I have the official offer.. I disclosed everything on the form, but this is the first time they'll be seeing it. Their background check is very inclusive, up to 10 years. Rather than mail everything in, I'm going to drive up to drop everything off tomorrow and be upfront about it.

was it driving under the influence of beer or strong liquor ?

was the blood alcohol level at marginal limits, or remarkably high ?

was a ban introduced ? for 12 to 24 months ?

Just let them do their job, and wait it out.

I dont think it`ll help any better for you to tell them, and who knows they might just over look it depending on the fraction of the DUI since it was long time ago.

3.5 years is awhile back.

Best of luck getting that job. If you need work, message mrhelpful he usually has work for people.

That is a minor problem. It is not like you when into prison. Don't worry about it.

Tell them before the check starts, dont let them find out
But don;t act like it's a big deal when you disclose, but disclose

Just explain in details of what happened, and you did to correct that over the years being sober.

Usually people are very sympathetic to these things.
