Currently or total? There will be a total amount of 21 million eventually. You can see the current amount here https://blockchain.info/charts/total-bitcoins

by the end of today 300,000 blocks would have been processed
210,000 at 50btc each =10.5mill
and 90,000 at 25btc each  =2.25mill

so at block 300,000 (roughly 18 hours from this message time stamp)
12,750,000 bitcoins would be mined

So already over a  half bitcoins mined in 5 years? I wonder how many years It will take to mine all bitcoins? I know that there is such a thing as difficulty and as more bitcoins are mined It gets harder and harder to mine them and much slower.

Half the bitcoins were mined in approximately the first 4 years.

One forth of the bitcoins will be mined in the 4 years following that.

One eighth of the bitcoins will be mined in the 4 years following that.

One sixteenth of the bitcoins will be mined in the 4 years following that.

One thirty-second of the bitcoins will be mined in the 4 years following that.

(Do you see the pattern yet?)

The last fraction of a bitcoin will be mined somewhere around the year 2140.

Wonder no longer.  The rate of bitcoins issued will keep halving roughly every 4 years, and the last halving will occur around 125 years from now.   I'm old enough that I may not be around to see it.   ;)

Almost half of 21 mil coins to be mined. Not bad, my miner will be busy for long time to receive fair share of the remaining coins

Keep in mind that most of that when to the FBI, or some crazy event.

Like the 1st crash on Mt.Gox, then Mt.Gox stealing coins.

Keep in mind that most of that when to the FBI, or some crazy event.

AFAIK, FBI "only" has 144000 btc on 1FfmbHfnpaZjKFvyi1okTjJJusN455paPH (DPR Seized Coins) and 30000 btc on 1F1tAaz5x1HUXrCNLbtMDqcw6o5GNn4xqX (Silkroad Seized Coins).

So It will take over 115 years from now to mine all bitcoins? Now I strongly believe that bitcoin has a huge potential as the future currency, of course in over 100 years.. I have no idea where technology will go..

Right now,

Total coins in circulation: BTC12,751,225
Total market cap: $5,738,051,250

Some 7-8% of all the coins are believed to be lost (i.e without the private key). So the actual number might be less than BTC12 million.

I fear that you'll have to wait until the year 2140 to see all the bitcoins out.  ;D

Indeed it would be a bit earlier than 2140.
Due to increasing difficulty, it takes less than 4 years to reach the first halving and the second halving is expected to happen in mid-2016 rather than 2017 :)

Of course theoretically it could decrease, but I can only see the hashrate to be level out, rather than going down significantly (unless bitcoin has completely died or be replaced someday).
If the miners find mining not profitable, they would sell their equipment and the new owners will still use them on mining (maybe without understanding its profitability or maybe just mining for fun).

EDIT: Fixed typos.

You are aware that the difficulty dropped by nearly 10% on March 25, 2011, right?

Yes, and indeed the difficulty has dropped by 18.03% on Oct 31 2011 and by 11.59% on Dec 26 2012. ;)
Maybe I should modify my earlier reply as "IMHO, it may be a bit earlier than 2140."

Actually 21 mil/ (13 mil) is very few according to growing number of users.
We have > 7 billions people on the Earth ..

If bitcoin continues to spread the world (which is no doubt) soon we'll see 21 billions mBTC )
Using values like 0.0001 BTC is not very convinient

There can be a max of 21 million BTC mined (the total available supply will be lower as some transactions have invalid outputs and will be forever destroyed).

As of now there are roughly 12.8 million BTC outstanding.

I don't understand your question.

After block 6930000, all the new bitcoins will have been created. At that point, there will have been nearly 20999999.9769 BTC created.  People will just have to use the bitcoins that already exist, since there won't be any more created after that.

Well, if everything works out fine, Bitcoin will be worth quite a bit then and transaction fees are able to pay miners for their work. If mining becomes unprofitable, less people will mine, but there's no harm in that.

Chances are:
1. Bitcoin price will go up
2. Tx fee will go up
3. Number of miners will go down
4. Big bitcoin holders will mine at loss to support mining
5. A combination of the above
