Title: [SOLVED] Should I be suspicious...?
Post by: Yakamoto on May 09, 2014, 06:00:10 PM
I got a payment in Bitcoin from 3 wallets, with semi-small amounts taken from each. Should I be suspicious about the amount of accounts and the small amounts taken from each, or is it a non-worry?

No. Why should you be worried? This is normal. Was you expecting the payment?

I mean the number of wallets. I was expecting the payment, but it seems kind of weird for 3 different wallets with small amounts.

Maybe me just being a noob.

You mean the number of addresses? No, it's not uncommon at all and normal. If you send 1 BTC but only have the total spread out among 3 different addresses it'll come from all three.

I had a similar scenario to this, thanks for insightful info.

Bitcoins cannot be taken back. If you received them, they are yours.

Bitcoin transactions are not as simple as they might appear. It helps to understand how transactions work before you start looking under the hood.

There is nothing to worry about.

You actually mean the number of addresses. A wallet contains one or more addresses. Those bitcoins came from three addresses in the same wallet. It is completely normal.

It is completely normal.

Say, if you have a 0.1 btc on address 1 and a 0.3 btc on address 2, your transaction will be from both addresses when you want to send 0.35 btc out (and 0.05 btc to a change address).

Absolutely normal
I often spread payments across several of my wallets

If that's one transactions that might be from a qt wallet, actually it's a feature of bitcoin-qt wallet so no need to worry about it.

I mean the number of wallets.

Please take the time to learn the difference between a "wallet", an "address", and a "transaction input".

It is not possible for you to know how many wallets the 3 inputs came from.  They might have all come from the same wallet, they might have come from 2 wallets, they might have come 3 different wallets.

Imagine you own a shop. Someone comes in to purchase something that costs $33.

They hand you a $20, a $10, and a $5!  Oh noes!  Should you be concerned that the payment came from 3 wallets?

Wait, they had the 3 bills in their hand when they walked in.  You didn't see how many wallets they took the bills out of.  Maybe they were storing them all in the same wallet?  Maybe they have separate wallets, and got one bill from each?  Why do you care?

It is not really a feature of bitcoin-qt at all...
It happens because the sender doesn't have a single input big enough to cover the whole amount.

How do you know they're from different wallets?

How do you know they're from different wallets?

You don't know, not that it really matters as long as you get paid.

If it was from a different wallet wouldn't there be a transaction fee attached to it?

A good analogy.

Are you worried your not going to get paid?

Despite where it comes from, as long your getting paid why bother?

Unless its some service you bought like a mining contract then I`d understand.. eg: miners, other services.

In the new bitcoin-qt client you can manually select inputs for you payment (as oppose  to them being selected automatically).
Perhaps seeing this will give you more understanding of inner workings.

You can enable this feature in Options->Display coin control.
