Title: I dont know what to do regarding my RIG
Post by: mrflibblehat on May 11, 2014, 08:48:03 AM
My GFX cards are pretty old now and cost me more money to mine than I get in return (3 x HD 6950's). So Im getting some money at the end of the month and wondered whether to go the 2 x gridseed blade route, or buy myself 6 shiny new 290x's.

What would you suggest? What does the future hold for mining with GPU?

The Gridseeds work out cheaper (just) but only work on scrypt, whereas with GPU I could work on X11 etc and new algos that come out

As you mention the Gridseeds are limited to what they can work on.

In terms of running costs they're probably the best way to go, but if you're looking to work on other algos, you're still looking at quite a running cost for the 290x's.

For a better running cost (for GPUs) have you considered the nVidia 750Ti's? The hashrate for these cards is lower, but the comparable return for the power they draw is far better - in the long run you've got a better chance of ROI.

their ratio compared to 290x is bad, we are talking about 3:1, this mean that for the same hash you need 3 x rig

Yes, but if you're talking about running costs, you're using around a 5th of the power of the AMD rig.

Did the same calculation myself about 6 weeks ago when I was looking to supplement my existing rigs. I had a choice of buying 6 750Ti's pulling 350W max, on a 650W power supply. Maximum cost for me £1000 (about $1500). For the R9 290x I was looking to duplicate what I had for my existing 290x rig. Two 1300W power supplies and a total cost of £2-2500 (about $4000). Total current draw 2200W. I'm paying for my electricity so it's a no brainer.

The point isn't necessarily high hashrate, it's to lower the associated costs you have to get that hashrate. As an example, there's no point having 3000 kHash if you make very little, or worse, a loss when you get that rate. These days with the pending growth in the use of ASICs it's better to look at the return for the investment you're putting in. If that takes 3 rigs, then so be it.

Thanks for the useful advice
