i would add that it's terribly important to keep the jackboot on the necks of Harry Reid and Lamar Smith.  keep emailing, tweeting, posting, calling them and your Congress folks.

they will be back.

so we banged our pots and pans and the cancer has just gone elsewhere. watch and wait how 2 years later it will be re-introduced like clockwork in the "do not kill kittens bill"

bad news: the idiots who drafted this legislation are still in power. they still have jobs and they're going to keep pushing at this again, and again, and again. it won't stop. maybe it needs to get *really* bad before it gets better. no-one even bats an eyelid when we say politicians are corrupt. there's the problem.

congratulations cyberspace. training level completed. proceed to level 1.

in 2012, war was beginning. main screen turn on.

what do you guys propose we do about piracy issue on the web? it won't go away on it's own

i don't support SOPA in the current form, i think it needs clearer formulation and due processes established  as well involvement of all other countries not just protecting only USA interests.

Doubt it.

SOPA/PIPA were pretty lame anyway.  Most likely the powers that be realized that, and also realized that much more is needed to really 'solve the problem'.  If SOPA is dropped for good, I suspect it will be because a real solution will be in the works.  That would likely involve a pretty massive infrastructure overhaul and only 'authorized' protocols being allowed.  I'd be very surprised if Bitcoin were one of these :)

This is great news, but it is but a band aid on an open wound that is Copyrights online!

People STILL haven't realized the times of copyright are over. Ever since the late 90s, no let me rephrase - the early 80s with the crackers movement massively copying C64 software copyright is dead.

Why doesn't anyone address the real problem? What to do if you can't protect copyrights any longer and you do not want to establish worldwide fascism?

Other solutions have to be found. Musicians who only do music for money will no longer do it. And they shouldn't. Programmers programme for the fun of it. These people need an income, yes. But they don't need to enrich themselves necessarily by what they are doing.

...

'Worldwide fascism' vis-a-vis the control of information is precisely what I would want if I were in a corp/gov leadership role and wished to remain so.  I think it would be silly to ignore the possibility that such a thing might be quite attractive to a large segment of our leaderships.

Other solutions have to be found. Musicians who only do music for money will no longer do it. And they shouldn't. Programmers programme for the fun of it.

Other solutions already exist - musicians can and do make money from live performances (recordings being just a way to attract a following), programmers can and do make money out of offering software services (which is why many open source projects are actually financially successful for programmers).

Copyright and patents do nothing to actually improve the world. Two examples from well known documentaries come to mind:

1) Jonas Salk's contribution by deciding not to patent his Polio vaccine.

2) Montsano's attempts to stop farmers from being able to harvest their own seeds.

Cheers,

Ian.

Take the Jonas Salk story with a strong dose of context. FDR had polio. Try to get people to voluntarily be test subjects for a vaccine today...

Okay - I guess this might have been a better choice:

1) Satoshi Nakamoto created Bitcoin as an open source project.

:)

Cheers,

Ian.

Open source drug development is an interesting concept though. I don't see it happening anytime soon. The tools to do it are still too specialized and expensive. This is partly due to the huge role of third party (government) funding allowing for bloated prices and inefficiency all the way down the supply chain, but still.
