Title: What language would you like to learn (speaking) the most?
Post by: skottiejay on May 12, 2014, 07:31:28 PM
For me I've had an interest in Japanese, but I've also been interested in Russian and Spanish.

For the par I would like to learn German I guess as well because my heritage is German.

On a side note besides duolingo does anyone know of any good sites to learn enough to become somewhat fluent?

Hard to pick one but two that come to mind at the moment would be Spanish.  Another I'd think would be Japanese or maybe even French.  I wish I could learn 7 languages, that would be so awesome.

First, I'd like to finish learning French since I started learning when I was in elementary. But I would like to study Italian, i think it's really useful and a really beautiful language.

The easiest language to learn are spanish and italian. You can pretty much learn these languages by yourself just fron online course. I always wanted to learn english on some higher level, basics seems simple enough and easy to understand but to know english on a master level is really not that simple at all.

Spanish, I find it great to listen to as well as being widely spoken and therefore very useful

French. I did it at school but forgot most of it and could never grasp the accent so I sounded quite stupid. I never really had the confidence to pull it off.

Wow three huh, nice!  What languages do you speak if you don't mind me asking?  Also do you do alot of traveling or is it just a hobby of yours?  Last question, did you go to school to learn or another method?

Learning spoken language is actually fairly easy, but when you try to learn Hiragana and Katakana it's like somebody just vomited a load of weird characters on the screen, even worse when it's kanji, I still haven't understood how you link up the characters to make the full words yet.

Any online tutorials/lessons I've found have done this typical thing of skipping over the part you really need :(

I speak three languages already. I was brought up speaking one language to my mother, one language at home and one in school. I can now say I fully understand them all, but can only speak and write fluently in two of them.
If I could learn another, I'd like to learn Chinese. Truth it's, that's unrealistic. So, I'd probably go for Spanish. It's relatively easy and quite similar to French.

I was just thinking the same thing myself.  The "characters"  looks so confusing to me and it would be nice to understand that also and things like calligraphy also intrigue me.

I find that fascinating that you were able to learn 3 languages as a child.  At a time when a persons mind is ready to absorb so much information I'm wondering how hard it would be for me an adult.  I must admit you envy you and I hope you able to use your linguistic ability for many things in the future.

Thanks :)
I'll admit that as much as I try, I still respond to my mother in English despite her only speaking French to me. It has proved to be handy before when abroad and also making some exams easier too. I should definitely try to practice using it more.
If you're looking for good tools, I recommend Rosetta Stone. It's an expensive kit, but you can pick some language courses up quite cheaply online.

Wow, i'm really surprised about the popularity of italian language here

But le me understand ...
maybe because i'm italian motherlanguage, but i don't find it so "beautiful" nor "useful".

I'm realizing that the coolness of italian language is mainly derived from movies  :)

I think that would be better learn wide spoken languages like chinese, spanish, arabic .

However, if you learn italian you will be able to understand (very roughly) a bit of spanish, Portuguese, french, and a dead language like latin.

mmh, rosetta stone use a particolar full immersion approach that imaho could be useful only if you are very young.
Just for hobby i tried it (for japanese) and even if i was able to aswer correctly to the quiz inside RS, at the end i was still confused.
That happens because they don't show you the translation of the words. They show only pictures, so sometimes you could mistake the word "child" with "son" or "nephew".

If u get it free, try it, but if you want pay full price, think twice.

I'd love to learn Spanish. People always say french was such a nice language to listen to. I recently had people from Spain sitting next to me in cinema in cologne and I overheard them talking in Spanish: It's such a nice fluent language. It just sounded beautiful. Much better than french. But maybe I am biased because the people happened to be nice looking women ;).

Try to guess which language is the most difficult in the world when it comes to grammar rules and exceptions. (The hardest to write is Chinese, but it's not the most difficult to speak properly).

If I were to learn it instantly, like get it uploaded to my brain, I'd pick Chinese, Japanese or Korean, otherwise it'd be something easy, like Spanish.

Japanese, mainly because of the anime/manga I've been watching ever since I was a kid. Love the culture.
Chinese would also be very handy to know.

Right now I speak 4 languages fluently and am wondering which one to target next. ;)

I'm curious why so many people know 3 or 4 languages already and I'm barely proficient in 1. Did you learn as a real young child? I don't understand how this works, I can't wrap my mind around another language, I took Spanish and French in high school and I barely know any today.

Is it because some languages have roots in others, like root words? I'm really interested in linguistics and language but this is all confusing.

spanish and italian ;D
I'm curious what is Tamil? Is it an offset of another language? I realize that many countries have different languages, but there are a bunch listed here that I've never even heard of before.
tamil is one of indian language, especially dravidian language (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dravidian_languages)
dominant in south india and north-east sri lanka
india has many local language with million speakers

This entire thread that I think I started just became a TIL thank you very much.
Linguistics and such really interest me, learning different dialects and languages (I don't know if they are the same I haven't done much study) as such it would be really great to have roots in a different language (than American).

They are the same as it's the same language but that doesn't mean you understand exactly what they mean either..
Think Deep south, or far north in America, same language different dialects, one says soda, another pop, another coke-pepsi.
Someone with a deeper understanding of Linguistics could explain it better.

I like to learn more about French language, I already know a little french, But I don't know how to use French grammar. I like the way it is spoken. One of my ambition is to live in France in the future.
