They are the glue that holds the network of exchangers together and at the same time, helping the community decentralize from one exchanger and easily move your funds to the next.

They are the largest exchange and under pressure from higher authorities. I will tell you that MtGox is the closest exchange to being completely legal in the US, UK, and Japan. We should be thanking them EDIT: My apologies to Intersango / Britcoin. According to them, they are legal in the UK as well. I did not accurately portray that in this post, for that I apologize to them. You have a brilliant point there about assisting decentralisation by helping people move funds around - we have primarily marketed our service for arbitrage trading and new bitcoin users, but this is another important use case too that we should look at much more closely.
