Title: Why isn't the term "cipher" used anymore? Post by: cbeast on January 27, 2012, 05:44:24 PM Cipher (or cypher) used to be used by cryptographers. This is technically what bitcoin technology is. Has the term been dropped by the cryptographer community?

"Cipher" is a synonym for "encryption algorithm". The core Bitcoin protocol doesn't use any encryption. The word is still commonly used in the terms "block cipher", "stream cipher", "symmetric cipher", "ciphertext", "cipherspec", etc. Title: Re: Why isn't the term "cipher" used anymore?
