Depends how you want to view it.  I'd probably put Peercoin or Darkcoin as third place.  Peercoin has a higher market cap than Doge, while Darkcoin has a higher volume than Doge at the moment.

Could change at any time, though.

Dogecoin's price has been on the downtrend for quite some time now, and it's only getting lower, same with Litecoin.

Maybe, but it's still going for a fad, though I'm sure it's intrigue will decline gradually. It certainly hasn’t had as many media mentions as of late and that's what it thrives on.

I agree with BTC and LTC but not DOGE. Not sure on a third though.

Only Dogecoin fanboys would put doge in the top 3 coins. It's done well, but it's not deserving of a place in the crypto trifecta of greatness.

Dogecoin is more like the copper or aluminum of Cryptocurrency. It's no where near the cost of bronze.

isn't dogecoin more a meme/joke than it really is a cryptocurrency? it seems more like a joke to me.. who really thinks it'd take off? its uniqueness is its name/humor..

Obviously it's a cryptocurrency first and foremost, but it's also a joke that got old pretty much after a few days.

Yea Dogecoin was replaced by Polycoin a long time ago..

well it exploded into the scene, so maybe it got old to a lot of people, but other people thought it was significant enough to push/pump the value of the coins.

Sorry LTC, but NMC probably has a brighter future than the lightweight one. I do not "hate" LTC, but NMC has a smaller supply and a unique purpose.

Bitcoin and litecoin yes. The third spot...that is really debatable. I suppose by sheer exposure, Dogecoin does fit the bill. But unless it truly identifies itself (as a coin used for various non-profit causes, for example) I don't think it is big enough to join the first two.

the trinity is bitcoin, litecoin, namecoin... (first gen)

everything else is just an altcoin (second gen, script kiddies copy and paste jobs)

unless an altcoin is:
made from 100% new code (every line re-wrote)
has some real world actual purpose beyond a handful of businesses
has some proper purpose beyond a handful of copy and paste dice/gambling games
has some proper purpose beyond being advertised on nascar/sport events purely to coax people to buy coins from holders desperate to sell

then an altcoin is just an altcoin.

dogecoin brings nothing innovative, inspiring or different.

NXT is 100% new code.

uses a new algorithm that doesn't require PoW.

several new features such as a Distributed Exchange and Asset Issuance.

agreed nxt is different. but its too early days to align it in the same ranking of bitcoin.. lets wait and see the adoption rate, resources available and usefulness before even attempting to align it as being near bitcoins level.

so lets avoid the speculation of the 'could be great' and wait for the 'proven great'

by the time it's proven it will be impossible(extremely expensive) to buy in.

you dont call a president the best president ever, before he has even been voted in
you dont call an athlete a record breaker before he broke any records.

so dont try calling doge, nxt great before they have even grown to be great. as thats just speculation, predictions, hype.. not fact

Dogecoin is a cult coin nothing more.  It will be dead in a year.

I agree with BTC and LTC, I am not fully sold on Dogecoin.   I think there will be another soon that will emerge in the top 3.  Namecoin and Peercoin have been quietly moving along as well. 

There are literally too many coins to keep track of nowadays.   You would seriously need an excel spreadsheet just to remind yourself of the names, the abbreviations, and the differences between them all...

Bitcoin and namecoin for sure. Perhaps Litecoin. Dogecoin definitely not.

To belong to the trinity, an altcoin has to both have high adoption and offer meaningful features that complement bitcoin. This clearly is the case for namecoin (the earliest altcoin).

I agree the dogecoin is likely a fad. Litecoin seems more legit and sophisticated beside bitcoin.

Mooncoin will be the Darkhorse can't go past all the property/speculators and their favorite line prices to the moon which seems to have died since the creation of Mooncoin at least it served a useful purpose by shutting them up, shows you how much the bankers are behind all that crap.

In my mind, Litecoin and Doge are too similar to Bitcoin. Any fatal flaw in Bitcoin is likely to be shared with these. As such, we need something completely different in 'the big three'.

Though it is different, I don't much trust NXT. Maybe in time...

Oh, is NameCoin that old? I thought it was one of the newer coins. Anyways right now I'd say Bitcoin, litecoin and NXTPeer. In 1 year though, Litecoin and perhaps the other 2 will be replaced.. Darkcoin? Quark? USD-e? Auroracoin? Randomanimalcoin? Uhh, no. not that last 1. That much I know :)

I like Peercoin as a member of the big three but the Peercoin developers do very little to promote it. It is a shame because the coin is innovative as is it's partner Prime coin.

I disagree: Dogecoin took psychology into account while setting the number of coins.

It has no place on my Bitcoin node though, because I only have enough disk space for one popular crypto-currency. Namecoin has a spot in my heart (and on my SSD); I hope it succeeds.

Definitely. All those people who use this forum to pump up Doge are going to be disappointed in the end. In my opinion, the trinity of the cryptos are:

1. Bitcoin
2. Litecoin
3. Namecoin

disagree on NMC. unless there is a hassle free pain free way to implement the domain scheme/structure and to point my website to.bit domains, domain is at best another version of florincoin.   Touted to death about a feature that is not at all used.

The only thing you can do with a dogecoin is to give it away as fast as you can before it loses several thousand percent in value per minute.

Litecoin was a failure from the start.

Namecoin is a coin that implements at the same time a decentralized domain name system. An decentralized id-storage was added recently.

You can either mine these coins or buy them at an exchange, like btc-e.com.



There are initiatives to accomplish that. To make it easy to use will take time however. I think that the id-storage will be widely used earlier than the dns-feature.
