If you download the bitcoin-0.5.2.tar.gz package for Linux, you should be able to unpack it and run the bitcoind binary as ./bitcoin-0.5.2-linux/bin/32/bitcoind . It works fine on Debian Squeeze, but even that's old. I run it in screen to keep it persistent (and p2pool in another screen window!), or you can use nohup, etc. |
