Title: What would be the most likely way to destroy bitcoin?
Post by: bitcoinsrus on May 22, 2014, 04:42:35 PM
People discuss an entity or individual acquiring a large amount (50k-1 million+) and manipulating the market.  Obviously the price would increase exponentially (making his cash purchase less and less).

I believe if someone wanted to destroy bitcoin, the easiest method would be to go after the network.  The computer chips that hashers used are made in mass quantities offshore.  If they or someone else wanted to use a number of the components to run a 51% attack, it would not take much cash at all.

(Litecoin recently had a similar dilemma and users were urged to switch pools)

Another alt coin with a better protocol can also undermine bitcoin (but right now seems unlikely).

Banning it does not seem to stop the flood of curious minds into it.

What other ways did you have in mind?

If you stopped locking your threads, you'd get more replies.

I do not want to clog the forum if another person replies to a thread I made a couple of days ago.  It would make my newer discussion posts less valuable.  People also do not like to see multiple threads from the same person (in the front of the page).

If I lock old threads that have a few replies (towards the end of the page) I can start a new discussion the next day (or the day after that).  Like a fresh start.

Do away with net neutrality and allow ISPs to block ports.   ???

Do you think if something like SOPA came back, it might a similar effect (other countries probably wouldn't, "Ban" the internet.

I am just speculating here. But there are moves going on around the world to fundamentally change the internet. That could include deciding what software you can run, what websites you can visit, what bandwith you can use. A concerted effort to keep bitcoin off the net could make it difficult in some countries. So far no one is suggesting such a ban, but we have seen our rights erode so much that it seems at least possible.

Too much speculation, too little actual usage, maybe?  :D

Quantum computers don't care.
At least that's what that crazy guy down the street keeps yelling at me.

I have think about this too, but i dont believe satoshi woulnt see this before, i mean he made bitcoin adapting it to whatever can happen in the future, in fact he made it for the future.. so i think he dint miss any security flaw

This is a somewhat similar question as 'what is the most likely way to destroy the internet'. Id say a meteorite  :)

If every vendor that signs up with coinbase/bitpay automatically turn bitcoins into dollars that could significantly decrease its purchasing power as exchanges get flooded with sells. People freak out, sell their coins until it gets damn near $0. People will then remember bitcoins as the "super crash online money hoax" and will be deterred from using cryptocurrencies. Forever stuck in a central banking scheme. The end.

Pumping the shit out of an altcoin, making it surpass BTC market cap, then dump them (while BTC will have already crashed) and scare everyone in investing in cryptos for the next 150 years.

Only useful coins will survive (like a real anonymous coin - not the DRK and MRO crap)...
