Does anyone have experience installing different fans in the Antminer S2's???  I am looking for a quieter fan.  Any recomendations appreciated.

Bear in mind the S2 uses 140mm fans and that no matter what fan you buy there is always going to be a noise level of moving X CFM of air through metal box full of heatsinks.

That being said, if the noise you want to change is actually the mechanical noise of the fan rotating, then different fans may provide relief depending on the ear of the person listening.

At the end of the day you want fans with high CFM but also high static pressure. In the 140mm fan world thats pretty hard to come by.

Some new fans have recently emerged that seem to have good specs:


Noctua NF-P14s REDUX 900RPM 140mm Quiet Case Fan

900RPM Model matches the CFM figure on a Scythe Gentle Typhoon 120mm 1450 whilst producing a much lower noise output.
Static pressure on this ultra low speed model isn't massive but performance will be good on low FPI radiators.
This is really for 140mm Radiator users looking for ultimate silence. This would perform perfectly with any 140mm Hardware Labs Black Ice SR-1 Radiator.

Specifications:
- Rotational Speed (± 10%): 900 RPM
- Airflow: 49.2 CFM
- Acoustical Noise: 13.2 dB(A)
- Static Pressure: 0.77 mm H2O


Noctua NF-P14s REDUX 1200RPM 140mm Quiet Case Fan

The 1200 RPM Model is a little louder but perhaps may be the best option for users looking to tune their noise output themselves and find their own balance of noise/performance.
This model has a high CFM and decent static pressure for use again on low FPI radiators.

Specifications:
- Rotational Speed (± 10%): 1200 RPM
- Airflow: 64.9 CFM
- Acoustical Noise: 19.6 dB(A)
- Static Pressure: 1.29 mm H2O

Noctua NF-P14s REDUX PWM 1500RPM 140mm Quiet Case Fan

This is the one that people will be looking at for performance. It is PWM so many may consider running it as 3pin and just using the max range of the fan for flat out cooling. This would work well on low FPI rads but would also yield great results on a denser radiator face such as the XSPC EX or AX range.

Specifications:
- Rotational Speed (± 10%): 1500 RPM
- Min. Rotational Speed (PWM, ±20%): 450 RPM
- Airflow: 78.6 CFM
- Acoustical Noise: 25.8 dB(A)
- Static Pressure: 1.91 mm H2O

I can't tell you what fan to buy   because I do not know what fan you have.  

  your fan may move  up to 150cfm

  so any fan that can not be close to your fans speed will kill the machine. or at least make it shut down due to overheating.

try to pick one of the ones with hi air movement.

Along with the above suggestions, also is not a bad idea to reduce the vibrations in the case as well. This kit can come in handy for a few areas of the case. You want to absorb some sound and vibration as well the case vibrates quite a bit due to the fans and PSU. This can help some.

I use this on one of my home based units. And PCs as well as they are all server class systems (dual CPU and all that)

Can help as well. The only draw back with the foam is dust accumulation. In which case I recommend putting some kind of cover over the cards (cardboard or a decent hard plastic shroud) to further keep the airflow going in/out through the cards only. This also has the added effect of dampening some of that noise as well. A cheap but strong cardboard from just about any box can work in this, The internal grooves in cardboard usually can serve some sound dampening.

You can do this under 50 bucks per miner...and even have spare parts left over for the next one.

This topic could be a full on quiet mod for the ANTminer S2.

I bought the b - gears 140m blue from newegg that push 110cfm and they're quiet..However they don't push as much air through the box as the stock so I might toss them and get these instead.
