There are about 6 million addresses which have at least one unspent output.  Understand bitcoin doesn't work on "balances" that is just an abstraction to make it easier to use.  The network current has ~11M unique unspent outputs and collectively they reference 6M PubKeyHashes* which are decoded addresses.

* There are also a small but growing number of native multisig, P2SH, and non-standard outputs.

What are native multisig, and P2SH outputs ? Care to explain ? Are they something different from the public hashes derived from private keys ?

There are about 6 million addresses which have at least one unspent output.
So, there are not more than 6M people who trust/use bitcoin? Not a big number  :-\

This is not necessarily true.

There are many people who choose to use a hosted wallet.  As such, they don't have direct control over any addresses that have any bitcoins associated with them.  Instead they have an account at a service, and the service stores most of the bitcoins consolidated into just a few addresses.

This means there could be significantly more than 6 million people using bitcoin.

On the other hand, many people control multiple addresses ( I currently have balances in about a dozen or so addresses).  This means there could be significantly less than 6 million people using bitcoin.

As you can see, it is quite difficult to estimate how many people are currently in control of a bitcoin balance.  I'd personally guess that it's somewhere between 500,000 and 24 million.

There are a lot of services (like coinbase) that combine multiple people's addresses and keep track of balances individually.

There are also a lot of people who have a number of bitcoin addresses that have at least unspent output.

It would be hard to say for sure as to how many people own bitcoin.

It would be fair to say that when more people start to adapt to bitcoin the price will likely be much higher then it is now.

Very valid assumptions. I would guess one person owning multiple addresses is far more common than people using a hosted wallet. I think your lower limit should be closer to the reality.

I don't think it matters. You'll never use them all up for the next 100 lifetimes.

Blockchain.info has graphs which show the number of total wallets they have helped create and (maybe) the total number of uniques

It is difficult to say exactly! I have about 20 addresses for different purposes on my multibit wallet so think there a less people who has coins in them. More like 1 or 2 million of people have BTC. And also there are a lot empty wallets too.

That is a different question.  User @rpietila has been trying to estimate the distribution of bitcoin wealth by persons (not addresses).  His current estimate is about 1 million people, but more than half of them are small fish who own 1 BTC or less.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=316297.msg7285505#msg7285505
However that estimate is very indirect and therefore dubious. Unfortunately, there is no reliable direct information about that question at all.

Indeed there is not even reliable information about the true amount of bitcoin transfers between different persons per day.  Blockchain.info has plots showing total raffic equivalent to 40 million USD per day, but there is no way to tell how much of it is "fake" (between addresses belonging to the same person).

Those are the same graphs available at blockchain.info.
That is lots of numbers, but little information; because we do not know who owns each address, nor what each transaction is for.
