I think that it was a nice idea to help students to get some extra money!
In the future you should make it available for more contry and you will have more participants...

Why don't you pay them in BTC, promote it a little and try to teach them something about bitcoins. :D

That's what I'm trying to do. I'm not charging any money to enter the competition.. and it's a small project.

I thought given that it's free there's be tons of people who'd be interested, but it's actually quite a bit of work getting the word out.

I'd love it if you told some friends (especially if they have kids / are kids)

2014 July 5k: $100 First Prize (Payable via Check, Paypal, or Bitcoin).
Open to all middle/high school students in the United States.

Isn't there any similar contest in Europe?
