Title: opinions on monitor flicker
Post by: illpoet on February 09, 2012, 01:30:26 PM
So i've been mining for a while with 2 hd 6850's but recently when i run in high resolution my moniter starts flickering/tracking something awful.  I suspect its the monitor bc if i run in a lower resolution with 75hz refresh it (for the most part) clears up the problem.  I just would like to know if anyone else has had problems with flickering? I'd hate to dump a pile of money on a monitor and find out its stress from 24/7 mining.  My gpu's are running at 63 degrees and 74 degrees.   the monitor is a cheapy hanns-g 27.5".  I hooked up an old CRT i had with no problems.  any input would be appreciated!

flickering can be caused through lowered memory rate. did you?

The Hanns-G is an LCD, I'm assuming. Your refresh rate should always be set to 60Hz, as that is the native refresh rate of the monitor. You will also enjoy a better picture using a DVI/HDMI/DisplayPort connection instead of 15-pin VGA, and using the native resolution (likely 1920x1200 from a Google search). I can't conceive of a way to hurt an LCD by sending it bad video.

The flickering/"tracking" you describe ambiguously, more information about what you are seeing (and what miner software you are using) would help diagnose your issues. Likely the GPUs are running at too high of an aggression. You may be using full-time miner settings on a computer where you really want unintrusive background mining, not leaving enough GPU power to do normal windows things like redraw programs on the screen.

i'm using guiminer -v -f -w 128 . by tracking i mean theres one fuzzy line that travels up and down the monitor, kind of like when you had to adjust the tracking on your vcr.   It could be mining too aggressively. i'd really like to just run this mining onobtrusively in the background.  the recommended resolution is 1900 x 1200 but thats also the only res that has problems.
