Title: Rack mounting troubles
Post by: darkphantom934 on June 02, 2014, 11:52:42 PM
I'm very new to rack mounting and would appreciate advice on exactly how to do it. I don't know how racks are measured, how ANY of the rail systems work, and the like. I was wondering how it would be possible to mount something like a TerraMiner IV or an Antminer S2. I'm considering starting a home server with both servers and mining rigs, but I am roadblocked only on the basics. If you could ELI5 rackmounting to me, I would   appreciate that very much.

Thanks!

Most racks are 19" wide, which is standard for most rack mountable mining and computer equipment.

I just got a 45U open frame rack, installed cheap rails, and sit the mining equipment on the rails. Each set of rails can hold ~200 lbs, so you can stack multiple miners on top of each other on one set of rails.

Here is the rack:

It's pretty simple, actually. I'm sure some folks prefer to use rack mountable rabbit ears, but I found the rails to be fairly cheap and easy to use.

I use these rails for Antminer S2's. Unfortunately I had to install them on the rack upside down (and waste 1U per pair of rails) because the S2 was be a little too wide to fit in between the rails when installed the normal way.
