Title: Securing my forum account
Post by: ubuntuLover on June 06, 2014, 05:26:22 PM
If my account ever gets hacked, I want people to know what my Bitcoin Address is so that I can sign messages and verify my identity. Is there any place in the forums to do that? I can't just post it randomly around here, because the hacker could simply edit the post with his own address or delete the post. It should be something like the Auctions sub-forum where you can't edit or delete posts, except this would obviously not belong there.

Add it to your signature and the bitcoin address section. Even if the hacker changes it, theymos can check.

I think you're supposed to send it to yourself in a PM

- Make a 2nd account
- send a PM with a BTC address you control to that 2nd account.
- delete msg on your main account (msg will still ne on 2nd account)
- verify that the PM is on that 2nd account
- only use 2nd account if your main account gets hacked.

It's best to include it naturally in a post. But if you can't, you can send a PM to an account that won't delete it (you could use DefaultTrust for this). After you send it, check your outbox and make a note of the PM's ID (visible in the quote URL).

I can't conveniently check signature edits.

I can't conveniently see PMs if all recipients have deleted it.

What about the addresses in our profile? Will they suffice and can you see the recent edits or history of them?

Wouldn't the most convenient way be to simply have an auction thread where people post their address?
Auction posts can't be deleted, right?

I've thought about that before but people would probably just spam it. Would it be possible to use a bot or something to collect known addresses from either the users profile or posts and store them somewhere?

Wouldn't it suffice to get a few trusted people to vouch that the Bitcoin address in question is yours ?
I've been a part of most signature campaigns on this forums and I've done a couple transactions through trusted escrows.
If they vouched for me formerly using that address would that be sufficient?

On a second note , doesn't this mean that a person who gains access of my Bitcoin address can instantly gain access to my Bitcointalk account ?
Associating a web wallet with an account sounds particularly dangerous.

I can see deleted/edited posts, so it doesn't really matter.

Thank you for your reply. I will do it the PM way, since I probably won't start being completely active until later on.

Put the addy in your sig and admins can see when it was updated to new addresses

If you read the answer given by people before you ...
