This is cool.  I've been trying to learn a little chess, but I'm still quite new to it.  I'd love to give it a shot -- I don't think I'm completely terrible    :D

I used to play, but was not a particularly good club player.

One of my "greatest" achievements was winning the "F-Grade" at our local 100th nationals.  I won a book for the 11 days of effort.  Rating got to 1300-1400 range, but haven't played seriously for years.

I have a friend that plays chess by mail. It takes literally months to complete a game. ;D

I suck at chess, but I might play a quick game if it's available on a website somewhere...?

I wrote an (still incomplete) chess app a while ago. Might be the perfect opponent for you... :)

Ok, the app was crapp, but it was quite well structured, so we could port it on various platform, like Swing, J2ME and even the Palm pilot.

I tried it yesterday - it's a two person thing with stakes.  It's in beta testing as it says in the title, but show some promise and could be fun.

I wasn't wanting to play against a machine, but what I would be interested in is a well-designed system that allows players across the internet to play each other. By well-designed, I mean it needs to be polished and look good, as well as having useful features such as a last-move history, a (minimally) animated opponent move indicator (to catch your attention if you happen to glance away), and other bits and pieces.

lichess.org is open source and completely viable for use in a bitcoin competition. I was using it for the core of a site I was developing, BitChess.com a while back but ended up hitting the inevitable wall of "it's impossible to make a chess site where people can't cheat".

I played a game, and all I can say is ... WOW. I can't believe I have never seen it before - and it is open source! Thanks for the heads-up - it is exactly what I was looking for.
