Title: Underclocking memory on an MSI R6850 1GD5 Power Edition
Post by: Raykoid666 on February 19, 2012, 11:31:02 AM
Hello all,

This is a hardware question but I must post in the newbies section so here we go:

I have bought the GPU from the topic's title, not specificly for bitmining purposes, but it does the job well and it overclocks nicely

I can get the core clock all the way up to more or less 1020-1030MHz if I increase the voltage and have the fan running at 100% without rising the temp over 65 (from the stock 860MHz)

My question however is that, for some reason I can't seem to get the memory lower than 1000MHz from the stock 1100MHz

Does anyone have any experience with this card? (or the Radeon HD 6850 as that is what it's based on)

Thanks in advance all!

EDIT: I forgot to mention, I am using MSI Afterburner and it does allow me to slide below 1000MHz, but when I apply the settings, at, for example 700MHz, and go mining, the graph just shows 1000MHz (aswel as any other monitoring program)

Overclocking however is not an issue I can also get memory as high as 1300 if I really want to, which is +200MHz from the original, only underclocking seems to be the issue

Right now I am running at 1.22v, 935MHz core clock (I can make this go higher but it gets unstable when I do anything other than mining)  and 1000MHz memory, and I am doing around 250Mhash/s with diablo miner (seems to be the fastest one for me)

Thanks, editing the afterburner config helped for me

For future reference: I edited these lines

EnableUnofficialOverclocking   = 1
UnofficialOverclockingEULA   = I confirm that I am aware of unofficial overclocking limitations and fully understand that MSI will not provide me any support on it
UnofficialOverclockingMode   = 2

thanks again!

You could try using Sapphire Trixx, I managed to get 600 MHz RAM to run. Trixx may be more useful than Afterburner, but that is just the word on the street. Another approach could be to edit and reflash the BIOS on your video card, allowing you to run RAM at its idle status of 150MHz, while the core can be at a much higher setting.

Have you verified that the memory underclock sticks with GPU-Z? I don't have any 6xxx series to test.

I was under the impression it was limited in the BIOS and required an edit.
