Title: Use of Bitcoins for Musicians?
Post by: xevious on February 20, 2012, 03:32:47 PM
I've seen many a business accept bitcoins as payment for goods & services, but was curious if anyone had seen musicians accept it?

I try toss my music around as a "pay-what-you-want" anyhow, but when it comes to other merch, I want to give folks more options. Anyone hear any success stories?

I haven't heard of any, but it seems like a good idea! Maybe you could be the first. I'm sure the community would buy some of your music with Bitcoin if the method was available.

What kind of music do you play?

I'm a nerdcore hip-hop artist based out of NYC. So... in a nutshell, I create music with Game Boys and synthesizers and rap about NES games and drunk-D&D.

Yes, it's a thing.  ;)

I'll more than likely try to set up a Bitcoin cart through my site in the near future, but I want it to be as simple to use as possible. Perhaps I'll try to get it set for my next album release.

That's awesome!  :D It makes me think of Aphex Twin - Power Pill.

Be sure to link your site when you have a working Bitcoin cart!

Feel free to check it out until then. Plenty of freebies all over the site: zillapersona.com (http://zillapersona.com)

I've been scoping out bit-pay... it seems like it'll be fairly simple to integrate. I should do a test run with it and see just how easy it is.

I'll check it out!

From what I've seen Bit-Pay is awesome. They really seem to be a company dedicated to advancing Bitcoin by providing merchant services, while getting their slice of the pie in the process (as any company should)!

I'm a musician, but I think people should just donate directly to a musician if they like the work, music should just be free unless its used in some movie, game, or commercial.

I'm always looking for good new music and inspiration.  I figure that any musician/artist that uses/accepts bitcoin probably has a decent artistic and musical taste. If you know of any, share a link for others to check out.

This is my band from college, Squeaky Chairs Band. All music is free to download, share, or use in any way you please.

This site has a great collection of funny prank phone call recordings. All are free for download. Give one a listen and I guarantee a good laugh (my personal favorite is "Glass Boots").

I have been accepting Bitcoin in exchange for freelance writing jobs. It's not music, but it's art.  :)

I set up an individual payment address for each customer - it makes it easy for me to track jobs/payments in my wallet.  I still take cash, check, and PayPal, but I tell every customer about Bitcoin and most seem excited to learn more about it.

Heck, if I were you, I'd write and record a song about Bitcoin!

I really do not see why bitcoins can't or should not be used to pay musicians, considering they accept payments in as many Fiat currencies as possible, then the bitcoin should be an option for those who wish to be paid in it..
As always it'll be down to the artists preference on modes of payment

Major necro bump... However, I believe Monero is the currency of choice for musicians. Many mainstream artists accept it now.

For now, bitcoin is not that known when it comes to payment though there are several establishments already uses bitcoin as a mode of payment and they had also integrated to POS that directly print receipt. For now, bitcoin could be hardly to be part of payment system because it will be costly after considering the high transaction cost from the conversion of bitcoin to fiat or vice versa.

This sounds a good idea but I dont think so anybody has done it yet or maybe it's in my knowledge but you should definitely start it as it would encourage others too.

I have not heard about the success story, but Bitcoin is "trendy" means of payment and its usage as donations for music can be an excellent PR occasion and attract crypto users to your music.

By the way, look at the https://medium.com/singulardtv/the-state-of-music-and-blockchain-2018-a13eb6d50d8b article
Here you can see how the blockchain penetrates the music industry.

I think I've heard quite a few speculations around it. And in that way musicians could know how many people are actually listening to what they've created and get paid for it accordingly. And also see other stats like how long the music was played for etc
