Title: Post your BTC Address here, in case your forum account is hacked.
Post by: Confessions on June 11, 2014, 05:24:24 AM
Here is a place to post your btc address, just in case your forum account is ever hacked.

Theymos has said that if you have your btc address posted, and can sign a message from that address, he can regain control of your hacked account.

In order for this to be effective, please do the following, so that the hacked account cannot change or delete your post in this thread:

1:  Post your btc address.

2:  Quote the previous persons post in this thread, so that if their account is hacked, and the hacker deletes/edits the post, there is still a record of the original content, through the quote.

I will try to quote each post as it is listed.  I will also maintain a list in this OP, of quoted addresses and users.  It is not perfect, but it is a place where you can post your address, and not have to search hundreds/thousands of posts to find one that will help.

Confirmed BTC Addresses:

Seems kind of pointless. What would any of us actually need to do this?

Because of this:  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=644084.new#new

The only way to recover your hacked account is to sign a message from a documented btc address that you have posted.  The only way for that to work without the hacker editing the posts on your account is if they are quoted, since the quotes would not be editable, unless they gained access to the account that quoted it also.

Theymos can see edited or deleted posts. You can also send them in a message to DefaultTrust though. It's unlikely a hacker could go through all your posts to find every address you've used as well. Unless there's like an official thread for this and you get the go-ahead from theymos I'd just stick to doing the above for now.

It doesn't hurt to have it here also. Theymos has already said it is a hassle to go through edited posts, and having helped mod a large forum previously, I agree.

Why is this pointless:

1. The post will be deleted by the hacker if the account gets compromised.

2. Quotes without the original post mean absolutely nothong as they can be freely modified.

3. The hacker will know where to look exactly for the post with the address.

4. It is inconvenient for theymos to look for deleted posts.

As hilariousandco mentioned, I suggest doing this instead:

-snip-
you can send a PM to an account that won't delete it (you could use DefaultTrust for this). After you send it, check your outbox and make a note of the PM's ID (visible in the quote URL).
-snip-

Well, I guess we don't need a single thread to collect BTC addresses because they can be searched for in post history....

It's a decent idea tho.

While I personally appreciate that you are trying to do something, I dont think this is a solution. The reasons are listed above, no need to repeat them. What would help IMHO is if someone would post a step by step guide how to do this via PM to "DefaultTrust" in the beginners and help section. If noone does this I will do this eventually, I just had no time to do so yet. Maybe you want to do it. If you have any questions send me a PM.

Posthistory can be manipulated by the person that took the account. There are very few places where you can not edit your own post.

They hack Bitcointalk accounts because they are worth money. The reputation, the post history, the activity - all worth reasonable money. There are lots of examples of hacks already done recently:

That's the point of hacking: exploiting vulnerabilities not discovered and patched by security specialists. Besides most account "hacks" on Bitcointalk.org are happening due to user error: inputing your login data in phishing websites, getting your computer infected with malware that tracks key strokes.

So 14 replies, not even one posted a BTC address in this thread. Why not just send an address under your control to another user? Pretty sure admins can see PMs.

I doubt they'd want to waste their time verifying stuff like this.

Well, as far as I know, it's one of the ways to reset the password to your account in case your account is hacked.

Yes, this is the way recommended by Theymos. You can send a PM to the account "DefaultTrust". Take a note of the message id (in the address bar) after you've sent it.
