Title: Using Blockchain.info and StrongCoin at the same time
Post by: crazydownloaded on February 24, 2012, 12:58:31 PM
Hello,

As Blockchain.info if often down those times -- but I backed up my private and public key -- I'd like to sign up to StrongCoin too and import my keys to access my BTC when Blockchain is down.
Is this possible, does it have any risk? I know it's risky to have the wallet.dat file in multiple computers, so I think it could also be risky to have the wallet on multiple services.

Any help greatly appreciated :)

Thanks!

it would be possible if blochchain.info and strongcoin.com agreed to use the same deterministic key generation algorithm.

but that's not the case right now. if you do that, your wallets will diverge because they keep creating different keys.

OK, thanks for answering, even if I don't really understand why I can't import my keys.
Worst case scenario -- How can I get my BTC back if ever Blockchain.info doesn't goes up again?

I've a backup of my keys in my email, so I think this should be possible.

Thanks.

I thought strongcoin simply sent change back to same address?

I did not know about that. if that's the case, then I guess it's possible to use both.

So what? Can I use both at the same time or is it as risky as using the same wallet.dat on 2 computers?

Thanks.

Yes we do send the change back to the same address.

It sounds like a sensible strategy to me having the keys in 2 places. Both services so the encryption client side so neither StrongCoin or Blockchain.info hold your private keys.

Hi dogisland :)

Yesterday, I tried to import my Blockchain wallets into StrongCoin, but I didn't succeed.
StrongCoin is asking me for a checksum when doing the import, and I don't know to get this from my keys.

Any help appreciated, of course :)

Thanks

Yep, but it's still asking me for the checksum (I guess it's used to know if the password I entered is valid or not), which I don't know how to calculate

It should populate once you import.  It always worked for me (unless they changed something).

New Account -> Import -> Enter private key & password -> "Import Key" button -> (this closes import window and transfers the encrypted key & checksum) -> "Save" Button

Thanks, it worked :)
I already tried this but didn't succeed because I didn't read that I had to choose the SIPA export format in Blockchain.

The organisation of StrongCoin is a lot more different than Blockchain, where you can send a payment from multiple addresses transparently. I think StrongCoin is lot less usable than Blockchain, but very useful when Blockchain is down.
