Title: Intel 160gb SSD
Post by: BTC guy on March 01, 2012, 12:08:03 PM
Im not sure what the deal is with this drive so im selling this as is. It was my personal drive. Ive had it for about 1 year. I had 2 of them in raid and they were very impressive. I recently got a 2011 socket and put together a new computer. I sold one SSD and tried to install windows on this one. I cant get my new board to detect this drive. Ive tried all the sata ports on the board. Ive updated my bios. I tried a new sata cable. I dont know WTF the problem is. It was working fine and now for some reason its giving me a hard time. So again, sold as is. May or may not be working. Hopefully you can do something with it cause im out of ideas. Either the SSD is bad, my new board dont like it, or something else that i have not thought of. I dont have a price in mind will sell for whatever. PM me your offers.

LOL i might as well throw it away for 1 coin. It will cost that just to ship it.

 ;) I know...

Did you try plugging it back into the old comp? Or is that not an option anymore?

I sold most of the equipment from my last computer. I have been thinking maybe its stuck in raid mode. A few years ago i had a pair of western digital caviar black in raid 0. When i removed the drives and tried to use them in another computer i could not get them to detect no matter what i did. After awhile i decided to plug both of them back in the computer that had been running them in raid. I went back in to the raid menu and deleted the raid array. After that my other computer detected it. I have a feeling this might be some kind of problem like that. Ive noticed when your drives are striped for raid they dont show in the bios only in the raid menu.

I will sell it for 5 BTC. However i just posted this so give me a few days to see if i can get a better offer. If i dont get one its yours for 5 coins.

Have you tried booting Linux?  It will bypass your BIOS so it doesn't matter what it's formatted as, you should be able to zero the first few sectors using dd and then make the drive work in any OS again.  A bootable image of Ubuntu or something would be all you need.  If you're not familiar with dd, mount, and dmesg, then remove all other drives, boot up Darik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN) and erase the whole drive from the menu.

I havent really tried anything but updating the bios. Not being able to detect and install windows was enough for me to buy a new SSD and forget about this one.

I will pay actual shipping cost, and will not charge for my labor to try to get this working. If I succeed I will pay a fair value. Otherwise I will dispose of it and not charge for that.

Im glad there are people here who are willing to play with it. I hope somebody gets it working, its a great SSD and i would hate for it to go to waste. 15 coins takes it if there are no better offers.

C'mon man, pull the trigger... 16 BTC sounds more than fair for an inoperable unit.  :P

The thing works fine, it's a known bug. I would bid higher, but I don't have any use for it at the moment.

I figured it might be worth a shot calling intel before i sell this at a loss. Turns out its under warranty. Intel is going to give me a brand new one free of charge.

I have no receipt. Luckily they didnt ask for one. I told them it wont detect and they offered me a brand new one immediately without even trying to troubleshoot. Said they would even next day air it to me - LOL.

+1 intel

I got my confirmation email about my RMA. Turns out they want to charge my credit card $25+$300 for an advanced RMA. I called and told them lets do a standard RMA. They informed me the exact model i have is no longer in stock. They offered me an upgrade to the 320 series. It will be brand new with 5 year warranty. No more offers. Looking for $230. Free ship USA.
