Title: Bitcoin Core on 2 computers without re-syncing?
Post by: zac320 on June 28, 2014, 06:50:35 AM
Hello,
Well this is my first post so I will go ahead and say I have a very basic knowlegde of Bitcoin and have yet to purchase my first. Well after a very long wait for Bitcoin core to finish synchronising to my desktop I am wondering whether I will have to do the same to access my wallet from my laptop? Or is there a way around this?
Thankyou

You haven't mentioned if you're using linux, windows, or mac, but if it's windows, you can avoid the lengthy blockchain download by merely copying a few directories over to your laptop.

X:\users\username\appdata\roaming\Bitcoin\blocks
X:\users\username\appdata\roaming\Bitcoin\chainstate
X:\users\username\appdata\roaming\Bitcoin\database

Also, in case you are a bittorrent user, the blockchain is available in a torrent, which takes much less time to deploy than individual transactions.

You can use a light weight client or use an online wallet, blockchain.info

Did you think about using alternative wallets and not main -qt wallet? I don't think you need to own full nodes.

There are also wallet that dont require downloading of blockchain- lightweight wallets.
Here is one good for example if you want to look into it: https://electrum.org/

Ok thank you, I probably should have done a bit of research on here first as I've already downloaded the block chain.

Hello guys a question here, my desktop is 64bit and my laptop 32bit, will I be able to still transfer the blockchain to my laptop? Or should I get a lightweight wallet like electrum and when i go away and want to use my laptop just transfer the bitcoins from my desktop wallet to my laptop one?
Thankyou

If you're asking about blockchain files as a block data then there should be no problem.

There shouldn't be any problem transferring the block data to your laptop.

Or should I get a lightweight wallet like electrum and when i go away and want to use my laptop just transfer the bitcoins from my desktop wallet to my laptop one?

Or you could simply use the same Electrum wallet on both your desktop and laptop.
Just create an Electrum wallet on your desktop, copy the 12-word seed, go to your laptop and select "restore an existing wallet from its seed".

So electrum is better than bitcoin core? Sorry I have very basic knowledge and am trying my best to learn what I can, I hope to purchase 5 coins when my tax comes back in a month, something small at the start of something big I hope.
Thankyou for your replies

Blockchain currently has couple of gigabytes and you'll have to download whole blockchain, with electrum you don't have to do so and you can also log into your wallet from your another computer.

I've already downloaded the blockchain to my desktop though.

Then there should be no problem moving it, just try it yourself and tell us? Also don't forget to choose really strong  passphrase.
