Note to everyone: this are not US Marshals Auction bid details, these are bid details of only SecondMarket syndicate auction.

I thought the bids were on lots of 3,000 bitcoins. The article states: "186 bids received and a bitcoin quantity bid of 48,013."

That doesn't make sense

Second Market had a syndicate to combine smaller bids into bigger bids. They received 186 bids from 42 bidders. And those bids accounted for 48,013 BTC being bid on (only about 30K BTC were available).
Barry sorts these mini-bids, and takes the highest 3K BTC worth, and places one bid in the USMS auction. Then takes the second highest 3K BTC worth, and places another bid, and so on.
That means he had 16 bids. Only 10 could win. And those 10 go against other major bidders in the REAL auction.

Y'all should start a bunghole newswire service.
