Title: Public appeal to MtGox regarding the recent robberies !
Post by: paraipan on March 02, 2012, 05:00:19 AM
Seems like somebody is selling a great deal of coins right now on your market MtGox, giving the rapid price decrease. A few robberies (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=66916) have occurred lately on Linode involving Slush's pool, The Faucet, Bitcoinica (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=66979) and others, so those great amounts of coins could be theirs.

So i'm asking you guys, please, for the community's best interest, provide some public info or investigate on the issue and give those people a chance to recover their money somehow. I know this could damage the profits you could make right now but you will get our appreciation in long term and keep having the great reputation you have.

Bitcoin is information. We don't want to start policing that now, especially without direct proof. Nothing will kill bitcoin quicker.

So i'm asking you guys, please, for the community's best interest, provide some public info
Privacy policy.

or investigate on the issue and give those people a chance to recover their money somehow.
I'm pretty sure Mark will be on top of it. Has anyone called him yet?

Bad idea. Making the info public would spook the fish. Better to discretely monitor the suspicious transactions with meticulous accounting.
An investigation is almost certainly underway.

Well someone really nail one of these thieve(s) for once ? ???  It really would do the bitcoin community a lot of good if we actually caught some of these people make people think twice about doing it.

The same coins? Unlikely. And good luck withdrawing, there are limits for a good reason. It is simply scared users dumping and getting out. All the more coin for me! Buy!

We're not seeing any of the coins being sold being related even remotely to the ones stolen.

If they're smart enough to hack a linode management terminal, they're smart enough to mix their coins first and sell them much letter to avoid being noticed.

The coins are lost. People will just need to learn from this.

slush it's sleeping right now because he would surely give them a call and exchange some info on this. The coins could have been transferred on the exchange right away without even laundering

Actually, I'm talking to slush right now. And no, they couldn't, because we would know where they came from and where they went. As far as I can tell the stolen coins haven't been sold yet. Relax. It's just a mix of normal traffic (probably bitcoinica) and lots of scared bunnies hopping around.

As far as we can tell the Bitcoin sold on Mt.Gox are not stolen ones and there are few chance that these coins will be ever sold via our network/Mt.Gox

thanks for the fast response, i only hope you're right on that with all this strange activity lately and no data to back it up more than blockchain explorer. So i get that no one transferred an unusual amount of bitcoins to your exchange lately ?

Or to cause panic, epic CIA style. Seems to be working, according to how the market is behaving right now.

You underestimate the size of the userbase. Yes, there are plenty of Robert Hamburgers there, but there are also particle physicists, astronauts, and most certainly a full share of hackers. Whoever is in the Bitcoin community can also be in the SA community.

I don’t think it’s that so much as it is that you’re full of shit. The coins that are being sold right now aren’t the stolen ones. Look for yourself. Obviously this is a panic run and you're adding to it. Why don’t you just STFU.

i would love to have that confirmed from MtGox with some data, like the last 24h deposits or anything else, until then as were both concerned they could be handling stolen coins right now. So please stay out if you don't have anything to add

Let me get this straight. Even though the wallet information for the stolen coins has already been publicly published and can easily be followed by anyone with half a clue, you want MtGox to break their privacy policy with their users to publish the personal information of deposits etc just so you can feel better about a statement that MtGox has already made?

How about this: prove that the coins were sent to MtGox. Contrary to popular belief, it is extremely easy to do so.

You're very thick, that's a given.

What do you qualify as "unusual"? Is someone selling 20,000BTC right now unusual?

Do you not understand that by releasing ANY information on deposits and withdrawals, they would be breaking their agreement with their customers?

You seem to be determined to keep your mouth moving and your brain stopped.

The agreement is broken the moment stolen coins, digital goods, are sold with them.

As far as we can tell the Bitcoin sold on Mt.Gox are not stolen ones and there are few chance that these coins will be ever sold via our network/Mt.Gox

Maybe not immediatley. But several months from now when the coins are sufficiently mixed into the network I don't see how you can avoid having any tainted coins going through Mt. Gox. The coins from that allinvain-theft are currently mixed into 100,000 addresses.

And as (if I remember correctly) we agreed in another thread, MtGox should never be held to blocking Bitcoins from being bought on MtGox (unless they want to buy them themselves and eat the losses) or sold on MtGox (unless they have proof the seller is the theif) just because the coins were stolen. Money is money. Anyone who believes money has "intention" or "agenda" in itself is not involved in Bitcoin, they're involved in the process to make the FED, FinCEN and the US dollar stronger.
