Title: Custom Notebooks - Online shopping in Canada
Post by: bitlane on March 03, 2012, 03:30:34 AM
My asshole is still sore after the order I was just forced to place for a client and the ONLY place I knew to use off the top of my head (and in a hurry) was Dell.ca unfortunately.

You would think that living in a city of well over 1 million people (and growing every day) that I would be able to find something locally, but alas, you simply can not.
The purchase of the day was to be a 'Drafting Workstation/Desktop Replacement'.

Granted, it was a pretty specific order, so armed with my credit card and a list of requirements from the client, I went shopping and no matter where I looked, there seemed to be only a single choice available.......a severely upgraded $2500+ Dell Precision M6600 Laptop.

My question is:
Can anyone point me in the direction of an online Supplier/Manufacturer that has the ease of use found on Dell's website along with the obvious choices for hardware etc ?

Can anyone comment on Lenovo, HP or any other Tier 1-ish establishment that COULD have worked for me and would work for future purchases of similar equipment ?

Eurocom (http://www.eurocom.com/) is in Canada, and they make some of the most outrageously powerful laptops ever. I have one that weighs 12 lbs, has 12 GB of RAM, 1 SSD, 2 HDDs in RAID 0, and an i7-980X desktop processor.

Note, they will screw you on price unless you call them up and jew them down. Good hardware, several choices.

For myself, I wouldn't hesitate....but I simply can not bring myself to ordering an off-brand for a client.

I wouldn't call it an off-brand - it's based on the Clevo platforms, which are rebranded to Sager, Eurocom, AvaDirect, and several others. Build quality is on par with the best of Lenovo's workhorses.

If you want something mainstream, Dell's Alienware lineup is pretty awesome too.
