There are always people who are closing bank accounts in protest against something or other. And in the United Kingdom, many people can't even open a bank account because they don't have the right identity documents.

There are so many interesting projects in the works I think something will break this into the mainstream sooner than later and every new piece is progress.  BitcoinJ, an Android client, services like BitcoinExchange.  The list grows daily it seems.

Sorry about that. I didn't allow changing votes when I created the poll and now I think it's too late.

Also, may I ask what country do you live in and how is it even possible to survive without a bank account?

Closed in 2007, USA. FRN/Silver/BTC. Any expenditures requiring FRN I use prepaid debit/credit cards.

I'm in a local credit union for basic banking services. first and only account I ever opened.
I hear a lot about how bad banks are but none of that stuff applies to me.
I have all the convenience and none of the hassles  ;)

Poll needs another option:
_ When they start charging for inactive / $0 balance accounts.

Not closing it doesn't mean I use it much.

depends on your definition of a "bank account".

When there is a better, more stable option to store cash in for the long-term. Thanks to FDIC insurance, the only way I'd lose what is in my bank is if the government went under. Hey, we're in debt trillions of dollars, not like they can't cough up for my measly five grand.

depends on your definition of a "bank account".

Bank is usually a fair size building.
To explain account i could probably use a box analogy.

So it goes like this - you go into that building and they give you one of these boxes. Then you go find a job and if you do as you're told, your employer puts some peanuts into that box so you can survive.

My original question was regarding the timescale. Time is a difficult concept, so you don't have to worry about it, just know that you got a lot of it to waste. Anyways, I wanted to know when people will realize that they are empowering the system which enslaves them.

Is that clearer?

When I can buy food, other necessary things and pay my rent using only bitcoin I will at least maybe consider doing it but until then, nah.

I have done two transactions with other Swedish people.
1. I bought 10 btc for SEK.
2. Gave a newbie 0.01 btc just to be nice and show him that the system works.
I have actually never even seen anyone from Sweden trying to sell anything (other than actual btc for SEK) at all or so, so I'm guessing I won't be able to buy food or paying my rent with bitcoin in a near future.

But I'm sure hope that is about to change and that there will be a explosion of people and company’s accepting bitcoin as payment, even here in Sweden.

But as many people have pointed out before, the problem is that is currently very hard to live using only bitcoin. Plato is the only one I know who had the courage to even try.. But if that changes it would be awesome.

I doubt it will happen. Bitcoin banks seem to be inevitable if there will be so many people doing transactions that running a node will be impossible on average home PC. And I think normal banks will offer Bitcoin banking, they would be stupid to not to.

They will never stiff you 50 pieces of paper. That isn't what you should worry about.
